At last! 12 Oct 2003

Format:Audio CD
Finally, a cd reissue of one of the best experimental releases from the 1980's. ''The Culling Is Coming'' was originally released in 1983 and was literally a record of 2 halves. One of the sides was a noisy, tape laden, ritual work out, whilst the other was constructed of calming gamelan-orientated pieces. For this reissue though, an extra 26 minute track has been addeed. From the same time period (October 1982), 'Move Back - Bite Harder' was recorded live in Belgium and is similar in tone to the experimental/tape piece from the original album - and just as good, in my opinion. This cd comes with decent sleeve notes from Alex Turnbull and features pictures from the original LP release, as well as featuring the original album cover (something that the original cd issue didn't have!). All in all this is a wonderful release - and one that has been well worth waiting for.

Okay, 23 Skidoo were never commercial or easily accessible to the vast amount of music listeners, but for those of us who like them or who have a knowledge of them, we can tell you here and now that this album is really more for the real fan of the group.

There are no beats at all, and it's not relaxed either. The album is made up of two parts. The first is a performance at Dartington Music College which is made up of chiming gamelan music and basic gamelan percussion along with electronic pulses.

The second part is from a live broadcast at the WOMAD Festival. This is a harsher recording featuring the band playing scrap metal and various other found sound intruments to try and build a mountain of noise and also to try and make a meditative noise.

One for the fans, like me. You won't find yourself popping it into the CD player regularly, but there are times when you will play it and will appreciate the future-thinking and innovative methods used by this group to try and put across their thoughts through sound and music.

When I was a music student in the 1980s at a fairly isolated college in Devon we were invaded one weekend by aliens. They arrived in a tatty peace convoy style van and proceeded to mike up the colleges Gamelan Orchestra. At that time this was the only Balinese gamelan in England and over a weekend half of this album was recoded. Several of us sneaked about listening to the sounds going on late into the night. When it came out on lp a copy was placed in the college library complete with lock groove at the end of one side. I loved it then and it remained a distant memory until I found this re-issue which I instantly bought. I think there are things here (particularly in the Gamelan pieces) that are really ahead of their time, its also nice to have a CD of music played on a set of instruments that I was intimately acquainted with (I used to play the gongs and the gong i spent hours playing is on the back !)......Its nice to see this timely re-issue of what is a significant piece of work .......
