Review

"This is the most important book written in the last decade in the field ofelectronic music. Together with the new Csound technology, it willrevolutionize electronic music." Max Mathews , Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics,Stanford University

Product Description

Created in 1985 by Barry Vercoe, Csound is one of the most widely used software sound synthesis systems. Because it is so powerful, mastering Csound can take a good deal of time and effort. But this long-awaited guide will dramatically straighten the learning curve and enable musicians to take advantage of this rich computer technology available for creating music.Written by the world's leading educators, programmers, sound designers, and composers, this comprehensive guide covers both the basics of Csound and the theoretical and musical concepts necessary to use the program effectively. The thirty-two tutorial chapters cover: additive, subtractive, FM, AM, FOF, granular, wavetable, waveguide, vector, LA, and other hybrid methods; analysis and resynthesis using ADSYN, LP, and the Phase Vocoder; sample processing; mathematical and physical modeling; and digital signal processing, including room simulation and 3D modeling.

The CSound book is an amazing tome of information which provides the reader with all the tools they need to form any kind of synthesiser with any kind of synthesis method.

Coming packaged with 2 CD's, the CSound Book takes the reader on a journey describing various non-linear, additive, granular and physical modelling synthesis methods with everything from multi-modulator FM to Audio sampling!!

Starting off with a gentle introduction into the language of CSound and moving on to more advanced synthesis ideas, this book is a must for 'serious' music technology afficionados.

OK in one really long sentence:

Obviously good if you want to learn about Csound but I actually just got the book a couple of years ago along with a few other technical ones to pad my music technology degree coursework with tasty Harvard references (which seemed to have helped as I got a high first) but i actually think the Csound format itself is sort of floating in an antiquated bubble out in the pre 2000 music technology void, which has no useful, or more specifically "time saving" advantages over stuff like Max, supercollider, puredata etc etc, or just straight programming using modern audio libraries; furthermore with the exponential development of audio and music technology on the linux operating system Csound just seems like a daft thing to bother with nowadays.

Or am I missing the point? Is there a point...?

:-P

Unlike supercollider, pd or maxmsp, Csound is very complete. Learning it is an indispensable tool for the computer musician, and despite its being around for over 25 years, it has grown and adapted to the newer computing platforms like no other of its free software competitors. It can be used for developing audio applications, plugins, compositions, mobile apps, and beyond. This book offers an introduction to this Csound universe and it is a very useful resource for learning basic elements of computer music
