Vanessa is still mourning the death of her mother and is horrified that her father wants to include his friend Lee in their family holiday to the shores of Loch Ness. She is even more distraught when they arrive and she discovers they are staying with Lee's aunt in a cottage that was once Lee's childhood home. Vanessa's mother was engaged upon some research into the story of the Loch Ness Monster and Vanessa herself has a great fascination with the story of the monster, so this should be the ideal holiday for her. During their few days near the Loch Vanessa has a close encounter with an inhabitant of the loch and learns that she has more in common with Lee that she could have imagined.
I like the way each chapter begins with a sweet small line drawing and an short account of one of the many recorded sightings of Nessie. I almost beleived in the monster myself by the end of the story. I think this is a good read for younger readers. Enjoyable, but not too challenging
