Product Description

You might say that a question is just a question. Well, that’s true, but if it’s as simple as that, then why is it so much more satisfying to get some types of questions right than others ? There’s something very rewarding in getting questions right which require more than just one straight answer. Questions where mere knowledge is just the start of the journey towards a correct answer, not the end of it.

This book is full of such questions ! Whether you're a quizzer, a puzzler, both or neither this book should delight, infuriate, and entertain you for hours.

Compiler David Clark has the best part of two decades of experience in setting quizzes. In 2008 he became the champion of BBC1s prestigious Mastermind quiz. He is also the creator and proprietor of the “Life After Mastermind” blog, one of the most popular and influential quiz blogs in the whole of the UK. In “The Cryptic Quiz Book” David brings all his knowledge and experience of 2 decades of question setting to provide you with over 500 great questions. The book has generous explanations to the answers, full of interesting facts that you probably never knew, guiding you through the tortuous route to understanding !

This is David Clark’s third quiz book.

Given David's experience at taking part in some of the most impressive and well-respected quizzes in the country, I expected much more from this book. In my experience, the mark of a good question is that it has one, unambiguous answer and that the information contained within it is both factually accurate and interesting. That having been said, his 'If this is the answer, what is the question?' rounds are far from unambiguous and require not only the requisite knowledge to answer the question, but the luck of a complete blind guess to come up with the question listed in the back of the book.

The second format I struggle with is the Only Connect 'Connecting Wall' rounds - again something I know he has experience of as a member of the Radio Addicts team in an earlier series. A perfectly valid framework on which to base a quiz round, but not an original format and bluntly not done as well as the professionals do it on Only Connect. When there are so many of these walls available on puzzgrid.com and the Only Connect website, why pay for some of a lower standard?

The final criticism I have is that the 'answers in the back of the book' format for quiz books simply doesn't work on a Kindle or online reading device. It would have been far more sensible to alternate questions and answers so that the user can flick easily between them. It is especially illogical that this is the method he chose given that, to my knowledge, this book has not been published in print (possibly due to legal limitations from the producers of Jeopardy and Only Connect?)

By way of ending on a high, some of the lengthier 'Round Britain Quiz' style questions do fit the bill of being original, accurate and informative, and could make for some very good questions in the right circumstances, though I would question his use of the word 'cryptic' in the title.

All in all, not a disaster, but much work needed to create a truly enjoyable product.
