This EP (only available as a download, although it had a brief release on CD) has two excellent tracks, and two so-so tracks. I am Not a Robot is almost exactly the same as the album track - in this version, it has a longer runout, consisting mainly of a heartbeat and sparkles. Simplify is a slender song about moving to the country for a simpler life. It is good, but it's not one of Marina's best. Starmith's remix of I Am Not a Robot is OK, if you like dance remixes, but it's nothing special.

The remaining track, Seventeen, is easily as good as anything on The Family Jewels. I have no idea why it wasn't included on the album. Like much of Marina's work, it's a little story. It has all the vocal quirks, the bizarre metaphors and richly expressive speech patterns of songs like Hollywood.

Definitely worth getting your hands on.

A Real Gem 23 Sep 2009
Marina and the Diamonds was just a name on the pages of Word magazine. Curiosity from an article that described her as the new Kate Bush led me on to give this a go, and boy was I glad I did. I can see the comparisons with Kate but this artist is her own woman with strong songs - opener I Am Not A Robot especially - and luminous arrangements. She's the most interesting new artist this year, in my book - much more multi-faceted than Ladies GaGa or La Roux. I'm telling everyone I know to get this and I'm longing to hear the first full album. My only (tiny) gripe is that so far I can't buy these songs on CD too. How's about it Marina - The Crown Jewels in a shiny Jewel case?
