As a fan of both celtic traditional and bluegrass music I was wary of a CD claiming to be a hybrid - too often it means an unsatisfactory compromise where original flavours become watered down and insipid. I need not have worried - Tim O'Brien has produced one of the most amazing and rewarding musical journeys I've followed for some time. Not only do the players from the two traditions blend instinctively and harmoniously but the tracks , mostly songs, are marvellous journeys, following traditonal paths to the frontiers of folk music. There are superb performances all round, vocally from O'Brien with guests Paul Brady, Maura O'Connell, Kathhy Mattea, Del McCoury etc and musicians Altan, Frankie Gavin, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Seamus Egan and a host of others and the sound is fresh, acoustic and vital, requiring no production gimmicks or effects. Standout songs for me personally are "Mountaineer is Always Free", "Lost Little Children", "Wandering" and the awesome "John Riley" (co-written with Guy Clark) although there is not a weak track on the CD. It is obvious that for Tim O'Brien this has been a labour of love. If you like acoustic music, from any tradition, either side of the Atlantic, you'll love it. Several of my friends have bought it on my recommendation and agree it is brilliant.

This is the most perfect fusion of Irish folk music and American acoustic music I have come across. Drawing on the top performers from both traditions,Tim O`Brien has chosen the theme of migration as the connecting thread of this generously filled collection of songs. Formerly known as lead singer with top-notch bluegrass band Hot Rize, O`Brien has a unique slant on the folk and traditional music of his ancestral homeland. His vocals are delivered with ideal sensitivity which is matched by the superlative (though never over-stated) instrumental work of a "who`s who" supporting cast.

The 16 track CD features songs of sadness, tinged with humour and resilience, and stand-out tracks include "Into the West","Lost little Children" (sung with sister Mollie) and an acoustic rap number - "Talking Cavan"!. "John Riley" tells of the "San Patricios" - the regiment of Irish deserters who ended up fighting for Mexico against the U.S. in the border wars, and is a good example of the type of realism with which O`Brien has approached this musical voyage. This is probably the best CD I've heard in years, and should appeal on many different levels.

Tim O'Brien is (I think) better know for bluegrass music, but this "celebration of the intersection of the Irish & American folk worlds" shows his great versatility. The guy plays anything with strings, all superbly, and the vocals aren't bad either. Great supporting musicians (including Paul Brady, Kelly Jo Phelps & Maura O'Connell) and a great mix of self-penned, borrowed & trad songs & tunes.
