Donald Miller, geologist and academic, has walked along the edge of a chasm for most of his nearly eighty years, leading a charmed life between endearing absent-mindedness and sanity-shattering realization. Now, all things must converge. Donald will discover the dark secrets along the edges, unearthing savage truths about his wife Michelle, their adult twins, and all he knows and trusts. For Donald is about to stumble on the secret...

...of The Croning.

"Powerfully written and imaginative, I literally couldn't put it down!" --Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., author of The Orphan Palace "Already a master of the horror short story, he shows himself equally skilled at novel-length work." --Publishers Weekly, starred review "The Croning deserves a place in the bookcase next to T.E.D. Klein's The Ceremonies, Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby and Fritz Leiber's Our Lady Of Darkness and that is the highest recommendation that I can give." "The scariest writer on the planet has to be Laird Barron." --Paul Goat Allen, The Barnes & Noble Book Blog "Laird Barron has, in a remarkably short period of time, emerged as one of the leading writers of contemporary weird fiction." --S. T. Joshi "If you think there aren't any new Richard Mathesons or Harlan Ellisons out there, you need to read Laird Barron." --Stewart O'Nan, bestselling author of A Prayer for the Dying "Laird Barron is one of those writers who makes other writers want to break their pencils. I'm serious. His work is that good. Worse than that, he's an original (damn him!), and the finest writer to join the ranks of the dark fantastic in a long, long time." --Norman Partridge, author of Dark Harvest and Lesser Demons "For my money, Laird Barron is far and away the best of the new generation of horror writers." --Michael Shea, World Fantasy Award-winning author of Polyphemus

4.0 out of 5 stars Fans of Lovecraft will like this. 28 July 2015

This is the first work I’ve read by Laird Barron but I can emphatically say that it won’t be the last. Admittedly, I was a little put off by the stiff Kindle price but after a nice bottle of red I wisely concluded it was a mere pittance for such a promising item so I downloaded it.

Don Millar is a successful geologist and regular family man whose loving and strong headed wife Michelle is a respected and published anthropologist. They have two grown children whom they rarely see yet who figure strongly in this narrative. Both Don and Michelle spend a considerable amount of time apart on separate field expeditions but this actually suits them both. Don sometimes believes it helps keep their happy marriage stable.

The weird thing is that Don regularly, accidently, encounters various sinister types in unsettling and disturbing situations when he’s off on his field trips… yes, very strange…and when he’s back home again, safe and sound, his cellar door has a habit of opening all by itself. Hmm…

The Croning is that not-so-common thing: a beautifully written horror story with a brain. I would class this as literature. As well as the general narrative and pace, the author nails natural conversation very well and I imagine that Stephen King, who tends to be overly folksy with his dialogue, both inner and spoken, could learn a thing or two by reading this.

Fans of Lovecraft will like this intelligent, slow burn story of creeping terrors capering insanely just outside of our peripheral vision. With tentacles. I look forward to reading the rest of Mr Barron’s stuff because The Croning is a good chilling read.

I discovered Laird Barron when reading a horror anthology on my daily commute. Wading through the average stories of this anthology I started to read Laird Barron's contribution and was instantly grabbed by his use of language. Believable characters in an intelligent well written story "The Croning"oozed class and unique imagination. This is a fantastic novel and I would highly recommend this to any horror buff who's looking for intelligent writing with real characters. A must read, not for just horror fans but anyone seeking to read some excellent literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent debut horror novel 3 May 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Before I write anything else, I'll mention that this review is based on a PDF ARC of The Croning.

Laird Barron's debut novel, The Croning, is an astonishingly good and original horror novel. It's an impressive debut novel, which was worth the wait, because it's written in beautiful English and the story is suspenseful. I was very impressed by the way the author has managed to blend modern storytelling and Lovecraftian cosmic horror, because this combination feels fresh. (I have to confess that when this book is published, I'll definitely buy it in hardcover format. It's been a long time since I've been this excited about a forthcoming horror novel.)

As several readers probably know, Laird Barron has written many stories, which are among the best the horror genre has to offer. He combines dark fantasy, horror and even science fiction elements in his stories and seduces his readers with beautiful and descriptive writing. Because Laird Barron's stories are excellent, it's possible that readers may wonder if he's capable of writing novels. I can say to these readers that they have nothing to fear, because he can write novels and he does it well. The Croning proves that he can write longer stories and keep all the threads in his hands (this novel also proves that it's still possible to write original weird fiction). This novel is just as good as any of his stories.

Laird Barron has chosen to write a cocmic horror novel, which contains in equal parts family life, threatening moments, occultism and Lovecraftian horror. From these ingredients he spins an exciting and captivating tale, which keeps the reader glued to the book.

I have been a huge fan of Laird Barron's works since the day I accidentally stumbled upon his collection of stories, THE IMAGO SEQUENCE AND OTHER STORIES By Barron, Laird (Author) Paperback on 01-Mar-2009, in a used book shop some years ago. Upon reading that book, I could not understand how someone could have sold this to a used book shop, as it is a book (along with all his others) that will remain in my permanent collection. Their loss, my gain though..

On to The Croning: I was unaware when purchasing, that it was a novel, but was most pleased to find out. If Laird Barron is the author, I purchase it regardless of the summary or reviews, as I have yet to be let down by any of his works. I am more inclined to enjoy short fiction, but I was drawn into the story immediately and found it annoying that I did not have enough free time to read it all in one sitting. As other's have already provided the run down on the story line of this novel, I'll skip that and just implore you, if you are a true fan of QUALITY, INTELLIGENT weird fiction, to purchase not only this astonishing novel; but to purchase every other title you do not already own by Laird . In fact, even if you own it, buy it again and help support one of the most innovative, gifted writers of the modern weird tale.
