In a British base hospital near the front, a team of doctors, nurses and VADs are working together to heal the bodies and souls of the men in their care. This hospital on the coast of France is a frontier between two worlds: between the trenches and the home front, between the old rules, regulations, hierarchies, class distinctions and a new way of thinking. Written by Sarah Phelps (Great Expectations, Oliver Twist) and starring Oona Chaplin (The Hour), Hermione Norris (Spooks), Suranne Jones (Scott and Bailey), Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), Kerry Fox (Shallow Grave) and Marianne Oldham (WPC 56) this is the story of World War One’s front line medics - their love affairs, professional triumphs, personal tragedies, fears and hopes as they fight for the future.

I could hardly wait for this to be released on DVD as I live in New Zealand and was unable to watch it on TV here.
My granddaughter and I watched the whole series in two evenings and in some parts we were on the edge of our seats !!
. It was nice to be able to explain certain aspects of the horrors of the Great War to my granddaughter. She was fascinated
and and appalled at the same time. I loved the nursing uniforms, they looked so smart, and of course the actors were superb
at making it all come to life. It was a sad part of history, and those brave young men who laid down their lives and fought for their country must never be forgotten. I hope there will be a series 2.

The series is really good and whilst it may not show the true and full horrors of WW1, I feel that the right balance has been struck. Well worth getting this DVD, I certainly will be.

Great TV Series so far. The plots are nicely coming together with a few surprises and twists along the way. Well produced and acted.

After the last episode I finish my review by adding one single and simple word to sum the series up. That word is: Excellent!

I keep reading negative reviews constantly about this show but I'm really enjoying it. It may not be completely factually accurate but it certainly illustrates the horror that was world war one.

I watched this and thought it was amazing. It made me laugh and cry, which is what a good show should do! I was so disappointed when it ended as I wanted it to carry on!

Interesting and sympathetic characters which were well developed. Too much credence was given to the love stories and the spy story, although the latter was historically interesting. I would have liked more emphasis on the day-to-day grind of the wounded wards and watched th stories develop there, similar to Call the Midwife. The reality factor of War damage and life within Front Line hospitals with all their difficulties and dangers should have been emphasised, similar to the description of Army medical life shown in the novels of Jacqueline Winspear. Several of the characters were really interesting, but overall, the series lacked proper reality and was a bit flat.

I truly enjoyed this mini series because it had a wonderful story with many interesting characters. I have never seen much information about the volunteer nurses so learning about them was enlightening.

I was not quite sure what to expect - this is a really good presentation of a front line hospital (in tents) in WWI. The interaction of all the varied characters, and the depiction of what life must have been like, in France, for all involved at that time. Also touching on what became known as "shell shock", now known as Post Traumatic Shock, and the lack of understanding it was met with - although in the series we see that at least one doctor had an inkling of what was happening, and the calming effect of music. This was a facinating series, and I saw it in tree sittings, which for me means - I enjoyed it.
