Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Crew is Dougie Brimson's first novel, following a series of books on the subject of football hooliganism written with his brother Eddy. Once again, the territory covered relates to the violence that surrounds football. This time, however, things aren't for real--still, the characters and story line seem real enough, especially for those familiar with any of the tales told in the author's factual volumes. Marrying the football violence theme with a well-established genre, Brimson turns his tale into a thriller. Using the master hooligan and the police detective as counterpoints, he weaves a believable and gripping story line, truly guaranteed to keep the pages turning. With the villain of the piece painted black from the word go, the chase is always on. What follows is well thought out, though the ending does not necessarily deliver all the promise of earlier chapters. Perhaps Brimson is just waiting to launch a sequel. Nonetheless, even if a tale of a group of hooligans travelling to watch England in Rome might cut a little close to the bone, The Crew will undoubtedly provide much enjoyment for fans of suspense, albeit in a new context, as well as those whose somewhat more macabre interest has been held by the author's previous books. --Trevor Crowe --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Crew was an unusual book choice for me, being female, not familiar with the football/hooligan scene, not interested in football and not too keen on thrillers and detectives in general - but decided to give it a try as it was free. The book surprised me, and ended up being a page-turner. The beginning wasn't too interesting, but the story built up, and my interest quickly grew, eager to find out what the master plan behind this all was. It turned out to be a clever plot, for which several people were used, unaware of their purpose. This climax was the best part, but the descriptions of the violence are just not my cup of tea, as I found it too descriptional for my taste and I would have liked to learn more about the characters and their underlying thoughts, feelings and motivations. I'm more than happy to have given it a try, and I am convinced that the thriller/detective readers amongst you may like this.

This novel follows a desperate attempt by the police to pin down Evans, the assumed leader of one of the country's top firms and the lengths they'll go to, to get him. They convince (read coerce) an arrested hooligan to go in as an informant, hoping to get more evidence on Evans and finally be able to convict him. The police know something huge is going to happen on this trip to Rome but they just can't work out what it is.

This novel is as much as thriller as anything else, with copious amounts of violence (necessary) and expletives (even more necessary), the picture created is bleak and the conclusion is so clever well, I would love to say more but that would ruin the ending for others wouldn't it? This novel may have took its time to convince me but by the end I was desperate to know what happened next and am looking forward to buying the sequel. Despite me obviously enjoying this novel because I'm interested in the subject matter, I think it would appeal to others too.

Awesome novel, appealing subject matter, just great

A terrific read 31 Oct 2011

First book I've read from Mr Brimsom, and the first ever "hooligan" book. Terrific story, great pace and a disturbing, unexpected ending. Very highly recommended - don't miss out on this little gem!
