Product Description

Amazon Review

The Crew is Dougie Brimson's first novel, following a series of books on the subject of football hooliganism written with his brother Eddy. Once again, the territory covered relates to the violence that surrounds football. This time, however, things aren't for real--still, the characters and story line seem real enough, especially for those familiar with any of the tales told in the author's factual volumes. Marrying the football violence theme with a well-established genre, Brimson turns his tale into a thriller. Using the master hooligan and the police detective as counterpoints, he weaves a believable and gripping story line, truly guaranteed to keep the pages turning. With the villain of the piece painted black from the word go, the chase is always on. What follows is well thought out, though the ending does not necessarily deliver all the promise of earlier chapters. Perhaps Brimson is just waiting to launch a sequel. Nonetheless, even if a tale of a group of hooligans travelling to watch England in Rome might cut a little close to the bone, The Crew will undoubtedly provide much enjoyment for fans of suspense, albeit in a new context, as well as those whose somewhat more macabre interest has been held by the author's previous books. --Trevor Crowe

Review

A winning goal for Dougie Brimson (Lynda La Plante)

Punchy dialogue between overworked detectives and cool, calculating gangsters which finishes with a big, technicolour scrap (Sunday Times)

More twists than a Roger Milla goal celebration ... A classic tale (Total Football)

More About the Author

Having written 15 books and two multi award winning feature films in under 16 years, former serviceman Dougie Brimson has emerged as one the UK's most prolific writers.

After 18 years service with the Royal Air Force -including both the Falklands and Gulf War 1- the ex-Sergeant engineer's literary career began in 1996 when he co-wrote a book based on his experiences as a soccer casual entitled Everywhere We Go.

This groundbreaking work examined the culture of soccer fandom from the inside and has become essential reading for anyone with an interest in the game and its supporters. A further 13 books have followed and their success has established the author as one of the worlds leading authorities on the issues of both the game and lad culture. His latest book, Wings of a Sparrow, was released in December 2012.

Away from the literary world, Dougie is also an accomplished screenwriter having penned the critically acclaimed short movie IT'S A CASUAL LIFE and the full length feature, GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS starring Elijah Wood. Following its release in September 2005, the film won numerous awards including:

Narrative Jury Prize - SXSW Film Festival
Narrative Feature Audience - SXSW Film Festival
Best of Festival - Malibu Film Festival
Jury Award (feature) - Malibu Film Festival
Official Selection - Tribeca Film Festival

After a successful worldwide cinema release, the movie went on to sell over 80,000 DVD units during its first week on sale in the UK alone.

2014 saw the release of his second feature, Top Dog. Adapted from his own novel, the movie, which starred Leo Gregory and was directed by Spandau Ballet star, Martin Kemp, won Best Feature at the British Independent Film Festival as well as a string of actor awards.

His third feature, We Still Kill The Old Way, is slated for release in december 2014 whilst projects in development include Mister One Hundred (a biography of Welsh darts legend Leighton Rees), Wings of a Sparrow (a football comedy based on his own novel) and Soldier, Soldier (based around the war in Afghanistan).

The next 12 months will also see the addition of at least two new books onto the Brimson portfolio.

4.0 out of 5 stars A night out in Rome .... 5 Aug 2012
By Skipper

This was the first book I read on my Kindle, which was delivered as a free download. The book was a page turner and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The characters were well rounded and had depth. Be warned that the violence is graphic but in my opinion necessary. The ending is certainly a surprise (not that I will spoil it) and I felt a little let down that it ended in this manner, however that said overall a very good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars page-turning surprise, just not my cup of tea 17 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The Crew was an unusual book choice for me, being female, not familiar with the football/hooligan scene, not interested in football and not too keen on thrillers and detectives in general - but decided to give it a try as it was free. The book surprised me, and ended up being a page-turner. The beginning wasn't too interesting, but the story built up, and my interest quickly grew, eager to find out what the master plan behind this all was. It turned out to be a clever plot, for which several people were used, unaware of their purpose. This climax was the best part, but the descriptions of the violence are just not my cup of tea, as I found it too descriptional for my taste and I would have liked to learn more about the characters and their underlying thoughts, feelings and motivations. I'm more than happy to have given it a try, and I am convinced that the thriller/detective readers amongst you may like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Crew 26 April 2012

I downloaded this book because it was free and i thought it might be worth a look. Being female and not hugely into football I wasn't sure it would be my cup of tea but I was instantly carried away with the story. I couldn't stop reading as i had to know what the fate of the characters would be.
Was swept along with a rollercoaster of emotions and my feelings towards the main characters were constantly changing through out. The author had a way of making you care about the fate of these "hooligans" by letting us in their heads to view their true thoughts and emotions . Loved it so much i instantly purchased the sequel "Top Dog"
