I liked this book. I read a lot of thrillers and police procedurals, and this one had a few genuinely surprising twists. The setup is pretty much boilerplate--smart, though personally troubled cop with a competent team is confronted with a deranged serial killer targeting women of a certain type. The investigation is hampered by a supervisor who is borderline incompetent and having an affair with a female officer under his command. He inserts her into the investigation and she goes rogue, oversteps her bounds, and endangers herself and the investigation. Throw in a Profiler whose skills seem questionable and who appears to be steering the team in the wrong direction, and you have a thriller that leads the reader down several dead ends. My one problem with this book is its editing. I suspect that paperback originals do not get the same editing attention as hard covers, but some of the mistakes with pronouns result in howlers like this: "When she and him met....." P 112. There are similar mistakes scattered through the book. It's hard to believe these slipped through the editing process. That said, it's a fast read with a likable cast and a scary killer. I will definitely read this author's other books.
