Product Description

Suzanne Perry is having a vivid nightmare. Someone is in her bedroom, touching her, and she can't move a muscle. She wakes, relieved to put the nightmare behind her, but when she opens the curtains, she sees a polaroid stuck to the window. A photo of her sleeping self, taken during the night. And underneath the words: 'I'm watching over you'. Her nightmare isn't over. In fact, it's just beginning. Detective Inspector Phil Brennan of the Major Incident Squad has a killer to hunt. A killer who stalks young women, insinuates himself into their lives, and ultimately tortures and murders them in the most shocking way possible. But the more Phil investigates, the more he delves into the twisted psychology of his quarry, Phil realises that it isn't just a serial killer he's hunting but something - or someone - infinitely more calculating and horrific. And much closer to home than he realised ...

I liked this book. I read a lot of thrillers and police procedurals, and this one had a few genuinely surprising twists. The setup is pretty much boilerplate--smart, though personally troubled cop with a competent team is confronted with a deranged serial killer targeting women of a certain type. The investigation is hampered by a supervisor who is borderline incompetent and having an affair with a female officer under his command. He inserts her into the investigation and she goes rogue, oversteps her bounds, and endangers herself and the investigation. Throw in a Profiler whose skills seem questionable and who appears to be steering the team in the wrong direction, and you have a thriller that leads the reader down several dead ends. My one problem with this book is its editing. I suspect that paperback originals do not get the same editing attention as hard covers, but some of the mistakes with pronouns result in howlers like this: "When she and him met....." P 112. There are similar mistakes scattered through the book. It's hard to believe these slipped through the editing process. That said, it's a fast read with a likable cast and a scary killer. I will definitely read this author's other books.

A reasonable read. The plot, however, is far-fetched to say the least, and the characters lack maturity and credibility. Nonetheless, these are early days for this author and I'm sure that she'll grow in stature with further books.

creepy tale 25 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a good story which keeps you on the edge of your seat, thought I would have nightmares after reading it.
It was spoiled for me by all the mistakes, grammatical and spelling. Also lines repeated all the way through the book. It is a bit off puting to be reading something and realise you have read the same words a few seconds earlier.

And I also love Tess Gerritsen, but Tania Carver has one advantage: She's British! This series is fantastic -- each book gets better. Read more

Brilliant
Tania Carver is probably the most under rated crime writer in the UK. The Surrogate was truly terrifying as is the Creeper. Read more
