Book Description

1 Feb 2010
After acquiring a fascination with the dubious 1980s haircut while travelling around Eastern Europe, Simon Varwell discovered a village in Albania called Mullet, and a mission was born. "Up The Creek Without a Mullet" charts the first three legs of the mission, in Albania, Ireland and Australia. Over the years, Simon has met clowns, farmers, journalists and politicians across the world as he visits remote villages, dried up streams, and obscure corners of the world simply because they have the word 'mullet' in their name. Creating media storms in both hemispheres, the list of mullets has grown like a tragic haircut, the quest threatening his career and finances, eventually taking over his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mullet-Bagging history has been made! 11 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
In its simplest terms this is the story of a man on a mission! The fact that the mission is "to visit every place in the world with the word `mullet' in its name" tells you something about the character of both the book and the author.

This is the true story of how the author's interest (some may say obsession) with spotting people with the distinctive 80s hairstyle developed into a search for places called Mullet. This takes him on various journeys visit Mullet villages, towns and creeks. Along the way he meets people, makes friends, and stirs up a media storm in Australia.

It is a very funny and somewhat fascinating commentary on places like Albania and Ireland what I found very interesting. Not being a very widely travelled person myself and especially having no attraction to the idea of solo-travelling it was good to hear about the joys and frustrations of the journeys, as well as the insights into the places visited and characters met along the way.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quirky, humorous read, anyone who enjoys travelling or who wants to know more about Albania, Ireland, Australia. Or simply if you want a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The good news is . . . 5 Feb 2010
By Deep Reader VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The good news is that this book is the first of a series. At the end Simon Varwell receives an email from Elizabeth, in Mudgee, New South Wales, in which she says the world needs crazy people like him. She is right! He delights, amuses and informs in his trips to Albania, Ireland and Australia on his crazy Mullet Hunt. Not only that; you don't have to read far into this book before you realise that Simon's heart is large in every sense. I won't be the only one astonished by the denoument to the confrontation between the clown, Peat, and the Albanian gangsters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mullet-astic! 8 Mar 2011
By Howser
Format:Paperback
While this book was no doubt inspired by the man-on-a-pointless-mission travel books by the likes of Danny Wallace and Dave Gorman, the author clearly has a unique and charming voice all of his own. This is a funny, always interesting and inspiring read that both bit me with the travel bug and made me want to hear what mullet-adventures Mr.Varwell has been getting up to since finishing this book. Apparently there's a sequel coming soon which I'm eagerly looking forward to. Well worth a read!
