Book Description

6 Sep 2012
Sveinn is a reclusive, middle-aged bachelor who devotes his life to creating and selling beautiful custom-made sex dolls. Loa is a divorced mother of two, whose eldest daughter's increasing isolation is giving her real cause for concern. Their lives collide on the evening when Loa's car breaks down outside Sveinn's house. Against his better judgment, Sveinn offers to help and Loa ends up staying for dinner, falling asleep in her chair, and stealing away in the morning with a sex doll - with the notion that it might somehow help her daughter. When Sveinn goes to the city in search of his creation, he quickly finds himself drawn into Loa's complicated family life. Funny, and touching, and never far from tragedy, The Creator is an affectingly original story of an unlikely friendship and an unlikely cure for the problem of never quite feeling real.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 17 Sep 2012
By oli
Format:Hardcover
I really enjoyed this book. An interesting and unusual story that looks at the complexities of emotions and relationships through the two main characters Loa and Svein. It touches on issues of mental health, singleness, sex and middle age and does so with great story-telling and great translation to match. Would definitely recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with an unusual storyline 11 Sep 2012
By Geoff
Format:Hardcover
This book is about the accidental collision of the lives of two very different individuals. It starts with an unspoken appeal for help, develops through a very out of character (and slightly weird) theft and then the major part of the book is about the relationship between the two main characters - Sveinn and Loa. This relationship is initially antagonistic, but ends up being strangely supportive as they deal with very different crises in their lives.
I really enjoyed the way the characters developed and the way they are described makes you feel you know just what they would be like if you met them. On several occasions the author looks at the same event through the eyes of Sveinn and Loa. Whilst this works well on the first couple of occasions, I think it is a device which is slightly overused by the time the story finally ends. However, the plot is unusual and really interesting and the translation is excellent.
When I find a good book, I like to read it more than once. I will definitely read this again

4.0 out of 5 stars A page turner 7 Nov 2012
By RSD
Format:Hardcover
I found this a gripping story of life and a study in relationships and communication.
There is pathos, intense emotion and enchanting and interesting descriptions. It left me wanting to read more by the same author who can write about human nature and family Interactions in a very interesting and sometimes very moving way
