Product Description

Product Description

The thriving Cheshire town of Cranford is on the brink of momentous change, with the imminent arrival of the railways and the threat it brings to the established way of life. In this glorious book, Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin explain how Elizabeth Gaskell's timeless stories were interwoven to create their dramatisation; then, join Miss Matty and her friends for a guided tour round their bustling neighbourhood, before discovering how the production team recreated the costumes, landscapes and decor of an 1840s town. This beautifully illustrated volume is redolent with the attention to detail that has won Cranford so many awards.

About the Author

Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin are the creators of the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. They have worked together on several well-loved BBC productions, including the seminal Pride and Prejudice and the bestselling book that went with it.

I bought this book because I love the tv-series and I wanted to know more about it. The book is full of lovely pictures and fun information about all the characters and the locations and much more. It's written with homour and happiness and I couldn't read it without a big smile on my face. I recommend it to any Cranford fan that loves the Victorian Era.

Excellent Companion Piece to the Cranford Series 7 Nov 2010
By Vic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The Cranford Companion, a book by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin, the co-creators of the wildly popular series based on the Cranford books by Elizabeth Gaskell, is now available for purchase. The miniseries, produced by the BBC, aired last year in the United States on PBS.

Lushly illustrated in full color photographs, this companion book will provide fans of the two mini-series, Cranford and Return to Cranford, with all the behind the scenes stories about the production, film locations, map of Cranford, and the characters and actors who portray them. Included are points of historic interest, such as the building of the railroads, as well as information on etiquette, the fairer sex, Victorian society and more.

It is hard to describe the book when a short video can demonstrate all its fabulous features so much better! I highly recommend this book to Cranford and Elizabeth Gaskell fans.

A Treasure! 26 Aug 2011
By LindaLeo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Cranford Companion brought me right back to Cranford, where I became reaquainted with some of my favorite charators! This is a beautifully written book chock full of unique photos. Written in two parts, we're introduced to the charactors and actors in the first half, and learn how the series was created in the second half. How interesting it was to read about what this dream cast had to endure to bring us this film! This book is a quality publication, rich on every page, and belongs to all those who loved Cranford.
