Product Description

Product Description

The Art and Craft of Goldwork will inspire beginners and experienced embroiders alike to create their own designs, or to make one of the 15 stunning projects, all of which have clear instructions and detailed templates. Each project is contemporary incorporating elements of historical design, including French eighteenth century floral designs, the timeless of Indian wedding saris, the charm of Byzantine jewellery, the frivolity of the Belle Epoch and the swirls of European and African folk art.

what a weird book 21 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This book was printed in 2004 and it just goes to show how much the interest in Goldwork embroidery has increased because this book is terribly old-fashioned in its layout and treatment of the skill.

For starters, there are only 6 colour pages, the rest of the book is black and white, but worse than that, it is 95% text! Yes, you read that right. A book claiming to teach you Goldwork is mainly monologue and has barely any diagrams - get me a chair, I need to sit down!

This is utterly disappointing and for my part, it makes the message of the book that much more covert.

HOWEVER, apart from all those disappointments, if you do actually sit and read the text, it is VERY detailed and helpful. Hence, I did not return it.

There is a lot of information in here and it feels a bit like mining for gold compared to what I am used to, but I think it will be worth it. It complements my other books on the subject, which are primarily visual.

Great front cover - makes the book look a lot more modern than it actually is...

Really impractical 3 Mar 2012

Unfortunately, this is one of the worst books on goldwork I have. And I own many. I've added a couple images so you can see how pretty they are. And the cover shows a nice project in detail. But you just can't have a goldwork book nowadays that never depicts a needle touching a thread. For example, one chapter is entitled "Goldwork techniques" and from pages 13 to 19 you will hear about several ways to couch threads, different kinds of threads that can be couched and how to turn corners. But if you don't see a single diagram, you really have no idea how to employ the techniques. Also, few of the projects are straight pictures you can frame...they take keen knowledge of other techniques for which this book does not help teach. A good example is the above Image showing the Elizabethan Heart-Shaped Miniature Cushion. If you don't sew or know how to quilt, you will not be able to make this project.

I like to look a the color photos of the projects because they're pretty. But turn to these books if you really want to find out how to do gold work:
