Invaluable features, such as safety icons to warn beginners of potential hazards, a concise history of ceramics and its traditions from prehistory to the present day, and an updated bibliography, glossary, list of museum collections, residencies and magazines, are retained in this new edition.

It may seem like another one of those books that are full of information which is either too much to read and take in or just too much you don't even want to try!

This IS NOT one of those books. Peterson has written some incredibly useful information which seems to be all my ceramic book collection in one (could've saved a lot of space!). With over 400 pages, each one is full with extremely useful information which is actually easy to read and inspiring. There is everything in there from the usual of different clays, decorating techniques, etc to info on Marketing & Computers, conversion charts & tables for days and also a section consisting of 50 pages of colour photographs of other work.

A fantastic book that should definetly be added to anyones book collection - if your work is sculptural, craft, functional or just for fun this is a must!! Also a great priced book for priceless knowledge!

A comprehensive tome 6 April 2011
Format:Paperback
The late Susan Peterson will be much missed for her excellent books on ceramics and ceramicists. This book was a gift to me many years ago in an earlier edition but it was sufficient to get me on a journey to full time making. What is appealing is the range and depth of knowledge, advice, recommendations, photos and history that go into this reference work. All this is presented in clear, direct and engaging language so it is a joy to read and re-read.

Susan Peterson did not write just this book but also a series of biographies of Maria Martinez, Lucy M Lewis and of course, her first major biography of Shoji Hamada. In all these works, she shows her natural ability to observe, record, query and report in her signature style of writing.

This book could be described as belonging to the "must haves" in a ceramic library, it cannot be overrated.
