Real Football ! 31 Mar 2011
By martin
If, like me you are becoming increasingly cynical about the modern Corporate game, and yet you used to spend every weekend travelling all over country following your team and exploring city centres that you would never normally go to, getting soaked to the skin on barren terraces and roaring your team on regardless of whether they won or lost. Then this is the book for you. Let's face it, in the top two divisions now you can visit half the stadia and never step foot inside the local community as many of them are on a commercial estate at the edge of town. This book peels back the layers to expose many great illustrations of how both the game and our society has changed.

From the front cover (gate at old Belle Vue) you feel you are opening your own world of football, not just the gloss of the premiership but the grain of the football league and beyond. Any real football follower will understand and appreciate the wonderful images which portrays the game in a manner we can all relate to.
This book sits on my book shelf and needs no dusting.

This wonderful collection of photographs is the latest dispatch from the front line of football photography from Stuart Clarke who surely cannot be ignored by those dishing out the annual gongs for services rendered to the arts for too much longer.
His photographs are available to buy individually too and once up on the wall look glorious.
This is a collection that will have the viewer weeping with both tears of laughter and also for the nostalgic near past!!! Each shot was taken from the heart like some cupid inspired poet laureate!!! Clarke approaches the subject with all the humanity of someone who loves his work. He celebrates the good, bad and even the damned right ugly and handles each with care and consideration.
As previously mentioned in another review, this latest offering should adorn every football supporter's bookcase/coffee table and makes for an ideal gift. Check out Clarke's other recent offerings on his beloved Cumbria and also his tome on the British Summer Festival!!!
