Book Description

The Cozy Chicks are seven mystery authors - Ellery Adams, Deb Baker (aka Hannah Reed), Lorraine/L.L. Bartlett, Kate Collins, Mary Kennedy, Mary Jane Maffini, Maggie Sefton, Leann Sweeney

Welcome to the Cozy Chicks kitchen! Pull up a stool and let us pour you a cup of coffee. We’ll have a chat as a pot of tomato basil soup bubbles on the stove. While the soup is simmering, feel free to sit back, relax, and listen to the sizzle of lemon chicken cutlets crisping to a golden brown in the frying pan. By the time we catch up on work and family and start discussing the last book we’ve read, the buttery, cinnamon scents of the apple ginger pie baking in the oven will curl around our shoulders like a warm shawl and coax a sigh of contentment from our lips.

Friends, food, and fellowship. That is what home feels like. And the kitchen is the heart of the home. This sense of warmth and companionship is what The Cozy Chicks try to invoke in our novels. And now, our cookbook will invite you to enter the heart of our cozy mystery worlds—the stories of our characters and of their authors, told through food. For a short while, our protagonists have taken a break from crime solving to don aprons and wield spatulas and wooden spoons. And they’d like nothing more than to spend some time with you. Enjoy!

“If you’re looking for a great cookbook—one you’ll actually turn to again and again. Search no more! THE COZY CHICKS KITCHEN is chock full of mouthwatering gems. Everything is here: main dishes, desserts, salads, soups, drinks, and did I mention desserts? Don’t miss this fabulous collection.”
--Julie Hyzy, New York Times bestselling author of the White House Chef and Manor House mysteries

5.0 out of 5 stars Sit back and get ready for your mouth to water... 29 Jun. 2012
What can I say about "The Cozy Chicks Kitchen"? Oh yes, I love it! The book is one I came across by pure chance and I think it must have been fate because I love this book. You've heard of comfort food - well this book is comfort food reading! It has kept me up many nights, paging through one delicious-sounding recipe after another, unable to decide which to try first. The book tells us a bit about the authors, books and characters (which has inspired me to make a list of all the books and gradually start working my way through them), and is really like having a chat and a slice of cake with a best friend. The recipes are all simple and comforting yet completely mouthwatering, and there's something to impress at every occasion - though the dessert section has to be everyone's favourite! Buy this book and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mysteriously Delicious! 8 May 2012
By N. Roessner - Published on
I originally bought "The Cozy Chicks Kitchen" cookbook collection to support the mystery authors whose books I love to read. I have read the books and usually passed them on without copying the recipes. Well, now I have them all in one volume. There's an impressive number of them and they all sound delicious. These days easy to prepare dishes appeal to me and this book is big on easy, because these cooks are writers who don't always have all day to spend at the stove. With that in mind, I have a list of dishes I will try next:

Mr. Cabrera's Tasty Chicken Cordon Bleu by Heather Webber/Heather Blake - only five ingredients and baked in the oven, not fried!

Since I'm always looking for healthy chicken recipes - Kate Collins Mystery Grilled Chicken Strips either grilled or oven baked will do nicely. The spicy mustard and smoky paprika sound delicous!

My plan is to serve fish at least twice a week. Salmon is a favorite, but now for something different - Baked Flounder with Fresh Lemon Pepper by Leanne Sweeney sounds wonderful.

Andy's Coleslaw will go good with the flounder. That recipe is from Lorraine Bartlett (also known as L.L. Bartlett and Lorna Barrett, depending on the mystery series.) this coleslaw has the same veggies as the one made by my daughter's mother-in-law, but instead of mayonaisse mixed with creamy slaw dressing "Andy" uses oil, vinegar, sugar, celery seed, which I am fond of, and a bit of salt. The one thing I will do differently is cut the sugar in half. When I make my own recipe I don't use any sugar, so this may seem sweet enough for us.

For dessert - wow, what a hard decision! I make an easy pineapple cake using a cake mix and adding crushed pineapple and sometimes coconut, but don't often have a cake mix available. Leanne's South of the Border Cake solves that problem. This cake is a simple recipe and uses crushed pineapple and I could add coconut, couldn't I? There is a recipe for a creamy frosting which my family will like, but I also like this cake without frosting, along with a cup of tea or coffee.

Or - should I bake Ellery's Chocolate Mocha Cake? It sounds decadent and delicious.

If it's for a family gathering I could make both. Yes!

You can't miss with this cookbook. In the last pages there is a section on the authors and their books, so you will have a handy reference for fun, new new mysteries to sample.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty Treat for Mystery Lovers and Cooks 2 May 2012
By Cindy Chow - Published on
While I sometimes roll my eyes a bit at mysteries with "Recipes Included" on the covers, I have to admit that I'm also the first one to flip to the back of the books to read the recipes and drool at the descriptions of the luscious, delicious delicacies. This is for all those readers who wish that they didn't risk getting chocolate stains on their mysteries as they cook up the recipes included in their favorite books.

Even better, each recipe has a paragraph that describes the relevance of the food to either the author or the author's characters. Not only do readers get additional insight into their favorite characters, they also get to know a little more about the authors and the authors' families. Myself, I couldn't resist the various fudge recipes by Ellery Adams and Maggie Sefton, Ellery Adams' Dark Chocolate Banana Bread, Leann Sweeney's Belle's Blueberry Muffins, or Lorraine Bartlett's appropriately titled Chocolate Sin. For the non-dessert lovers (gasp), there are plenty of recipes for main dishes, appetizers, soup, and extras. Heather Webber/Blake's Lucy Valentine's Cutest Mini Fritatta is already on my shopping list for ingredients.

Now if only the authors would next put out an exercise book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Recipes With Your Favorite Cozy Characters 1 May 2012

The Cozy Chicks have a delicious hit on their hands. Everything from hearty chili to warm you on a cold winter night to lemon icebox pie for a hot summer day. Easy to follow recipes with cute character stories to go with them. As fabulous as the recipes are, there isn't anything complicated in finding the ingredients or cooking/baking it. Ellery's Dark Chocolate Banana bread is to die for!! My craft club requests it, when it's my turn to bring dessert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Cozy Chicks Mysteries 5 May 2012

I love reading many of the authors from The Cozy Chicks and was really happy when they published many of their recipes in a cookbook. So much easier than trying to remember where I saw a recipe when I want to make something. If you haven't read any of their books, maybe this book will entice you to do so!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooking with the Cozy Chicks 12 May 2012
By Jane Doe - Published on
I love to collect cookbooks - especially cookbooks that have a special meaning or remind me of something (like my fondness for good cozy mysteries!).

My son sent me a copy of The Cozy Chicks Kitchen for Mother's Day (yes, he is one terrific son!) and not only will it be a reminder of him but it's one great little cookbook.

I'm a big fan of many of the authors that have contributed to this cookbook and their recipes don't disappoint. I already have my eye on several that I can't wait to try, including Ellery Adams' Key Lime Cookies and Lorraine Bartlett's Pizza Dip. But these are definitely not the only ones. The book is fun to read, with references to cozy mysteries and their characters, and the recipes are well-written and easy to follow. As an added bonus, many of the recipes are fairly quick and only require a few ingredients. This is a good choice for a cozy mystery reader who like to cook and would like add a somewhat unique cookbook to his or her collection.
