This is a strong psychological thriller with a very unique premise. The concept which gives this novel its title marks it out as a very distinctive novel and holds the story together. It also provides a very clever link between the hunter, Michael, and the hunted, Anna. The plotting is, in the main, pretty solid and the suspense well maintained. I liked all the characters, although none are particularly vivid or memorable, but the writing is visually strong and there is enough going on to keep our interest.
However, I was disappointed as I never really felt I got inside Michael's head and, though there are flashbacks to his childhood with his granny, it tells us little about what has made him into the kind of man who could do this. Anna is also rather frustratingly vague and at times annoyingly weak, both in her marriage to David and now as she falls for Matthew. Even taking Matthew at face value as Anna does, their relationship is never truly convincing.
Great mystery/thriller but don't expect to remember who the characters were a while after you've read it.
