Product Description

Cutting-edge international thriller follow-up to The Insider, set in the world of hackers, techno-thieves and inside traders, for fans of John Grisham

Approached to crack a safe by the owner's suspicious wife, reformed hacker Henrietta 'Harry' Martinez can't resist the challenge. Now her client's absconded with a fortune in diamonds, leaving Harry sole witness to a brutal murder. And next in line for a ruthless assassin who doesn't like loose ends.

The police are unconvinced, suspicious of Harry's past, and not even an attempt on her life can sway them. It's up to Harry to track down her mystery client. The trail leads from a top racing yard to a smuggling operation in the illegal South Africa world of conflict diamonds.

To get to the truth requires all her secret skills. But in a business populated by bloodthirsty mercenaries and financed by ruthless exploitation, how can Harry, alone and abroad, pull off her most audacious heist ever?

By Paul Madge HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The book kept me gripped from the very beginning as our our heroine, Harry Martinez cracks open a safe for a client - my heart did sink a little initially as we were taken into the diamond mines of South Africa and I felt as if I was going to be following story lines from another author... but that didn't happen and I'm glad to say the book was fast paced, interesting, and went into different directions to what I had expected. I really enjoyed this book - will certainly be looking for more Harry Martinez titles.

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I greatly enjoyed The Insider, Ava McCarthy's debut novel of computer based intrigue and gambling, so had high hopes for the second book featuring heroine Harry Martinez, which promised thrills and intrigue in the worlds of horse-racing and diamonds with murder on the side. The parts featuring Harry herself were well-written, the way she is set-up to take the fall for a murder and again has to involve her dad and friends in her attempts to uncover the truth and find the real culprit, some great scenes and atmosphere, but I found the sections dealing with conflict diamonds less readable: the way the action moved from fast-paced light-hearted chase and banter to deadly serious suffering of exploited people was an uneasy match, and I found the plot such as it was confusing.

There were too many characters and the pace kept slowing to a crawl to include the other elements, which derailed any thriller aspect. Here too, Harry's main skills seemed to gain little use, and her risk-taking and clashes with the police seemed more stereotype than fresh and fun. All in all I decided not to continue reading, as I had little interest in finding out what happened. If the author gives Harry another outing I shall cautiously borrow it from the library, as this was just a waste of good ideas and an engaging central figure in rather forced events. Avoid.

A cracking read 6 May 2010
Format:Paperback
A thrilling book, this had me hooked from the word go. Hacker Harry Martinez is an inspired heroine and the plot hurtles along at breakneck speed, each chapter ending with a cliff hanger so that you can't put The Courier down. McCarthy has clearly done masses of research on diamond mining and horse racing and the setting shifts grippingly from Dublin to South Africa and back again. There's never a dull moment and the technical details are brilliant. I shall definitely read the next Harry Martinez thriller and can thoroughly recommend this one.

Good for Grisham fans...
To be honest I wasn't sure that this would be interesting as it sounded horse racing related. Don't be put off though, cracking story, gripping through to the end. Recommended.

better than the first!
This book is much much better than McCarthy's first novel, The Insider. The writing is much more mature, and the main character more developed. Well worth a read.
