Product Description

Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) have joined forces in The Counsellor, starring Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Brad Pitt. McCarthy - making his screenwriting debut - and Scott interweave the author's characteristic wit and dark humour with a nightmarish scenario, in which a respected lawyer's one-time dalliance with an illegal business deal spirals out of control.

I should have know this film was going to be a waste of time from the moment Fassbender talks about being in love... talk about a total miscast! And if that is not enough, you have to keep up with the disjointed plot, which jumps from one scene to another! Great cast, yet my personal opinion is that Penelope Cruz is better suited to her native Spanish films, as she looks very uncomfortable in American films... if you've watched her in films like Jamon Jamon, Broken Embraces and Open Your Eyes, then you will understand what I mean.

I turned the film off after 45 minutes.... take Bruce Lee's advice from the quote above and do something worthwhile with your 117 mins.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute RIot 29 July 2014
Didn't realize Ridley Scott was this versatile. Known for tough, gritty drama, in The Counsel(l)or he's produced THE comedy of the decade so far. Naked Gun Meets Mexican Drug Cartels. A horde of box-office heavy-hitters thespianize to camera -- Pitt and Bardem are particular standouts -- delivering their ludicrous lines with admirably deadpan skill. (The outtakes of them corpsing in giggle-fits are a must for the extra features of the special edition.) It's not even satire -- it's broad, no-holds-barred farce. If you're in need of a good laugh, run don't walk to buy--
Excuse me a moment.
It's not SUPPOSED to be a comedy?

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridley Scott fans--look away now 20 July 2014
I yield to nobody in my admiration for Sir Ridley Scott.

A repertoire that includes such wonderful films as 'Alien', 'Blade Runner', 'Kingdom of Heaven' and 'Prometheus' places him firmly amongst the greats so far as I am concerned.

And so it grieves me to say that 'The Counsellor' is a stinker.

The plot is confused and confusing, the dialogue is unrealistic and at times pompous, the acting wooden.

The only saving grace is the extraordinary assassination of one of the lead characters towards the end of the film.

It's worth watching for that alone, .

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs counselling 12 Aug 2014

A-list cast, b-list plot. The first half not a lot happens - apart from nicely shot scenes with rapid machine gun fire conversations between characters and an appearance of a freakish version of Bill Cosby (Javier Bardem). I was about to turn it off when things perked up a bit when a biker has his head chopped off by a razor wire. This random scene then lead to some actual plot movement, but you are still left wondering what it's all about and what some of the characters were doing in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A CAUTIONARY DIAMOND 15 Nov 2013
By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER
Michael Fassbender stars in the title role as a lawyer, who as far as I could tell his name was Counselor. He becomes engaged to Lara (Penélope Cruz) who is as pretty as she is naive. Reiner (Javier Bardem) is a rich friend who claims "Women are an expensive hobby." His girlfriend Malkina (Cameron Diaz) is extremely high maintenance and out of everyone's league. Counselor has a chance to make some big money when he meets a smooth talking, mutual friend, middle man Westray (Brad Pitt) who arranges for Counselor to finance a drug deal. Seems the biggest problem is going to be how to hide the money. Then in the blink of an eye, things go so wrong as now Counselor and Westray try not to star in a Latino snuff film.

The production spends most of the time building up characters with smart dialogue. When the twist happens, this changes the film from a clever drama into an action crime drama that needed better action and to last longer. The film seemed to go down hill at the very moment it should have rocketed. It is a well acted film which I enjoyed mostly for the build up. It just didn't bring it home like it should, clearly a weak screen play adaptation.

Worth a view as a rental.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Sex. No nudity (Cameron Diaz side breast)

1.0 out of 5 stars Pointless 8 Aug 2014
By S Apple
Oh dear what garbage. I really liked the cast and I was hoping it wasn't as bad as people said but my goodness it was bad. Is it a comedy or serious drama either way the film did not work. I was bored and perplexed with the nonsense dialogue and random scenes that didn't seem to come together very well and the characters were so badly written. The twist was daft and the film just seem to go on forever. A very pointless film, don't waste your time.

Almost great, but somehow never quite finds its rhythm, and at the end of the film you're left sort of wondering what the point was.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad film 11 Jun 2014
On a previous review someone said 'Good cast, great director. So why is it so poor?' Absolutely spot on! Avoid this one, unless you don't like your films to have a coherent plot & are a fan of Javier Bardem in loud shirts.
