Product Description

Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) have joined forces in The Counsellor, starring Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Brad Pitt. McCarthy - making his screenwriting debut - and Scott interweave the author's characteristic wit and dark humour with a nightmarish scenario, in which a respected lawyer's one-time dalliance with an illegal business deal spirals out of control.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridley Scott fans--look away now 20 July 2014
I yield to nobody in my admiration for Sir Ridley Scott.

A repertoire that includes such wonderful films as 'Alien', 'Blade Runner', 'Kingdom of Heaven' and 'Prometheus' places him firmly amongst the greats so far as I am concerned.

And so it grieves me to say that 'The Counsellor' is a stinker.

The plot is confused and confusing, the dialogue is unrealistic and at times pompous, the acting wooden.

The only saving grace is the extraordinary assassination of one of the lead characters towards the end of the film.

It's worth watching for that alone, .

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning film about consequences 7 July 2014
This is a great film, about the consequences of greed and a drug run gone wrong. Set in the world of drug running and the massive business of greed and money, On one level its about revenge, the spurred woman who sets in place a series of events to punish, or is she just greedy? The message of the film is about fate and consequences and allows us to question what the effects of our actions are. We discover that it matters not if we are contrite, sorry or feel guilty for what we have done, we must face the consequences. Our petty needs and emotions as we discover those effects are irrelevant , we must always face what we have done. There's some great dialogue that you will wish to listen to again,so get ready for the pause button and listen again to a wonderful script .

3.0 out of 5 stars Deep and kept you on toes 3 May 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
Pretty dark and deep.
Good acting and good story line but a typical South American drug cartel movie with some diamonds flung in for good measure .

3.0 out of 5 stars A CAUTIONARY DIAMOND 15 Nov 2013
By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER
Michael Fassbender stars in the title role as a lawyer, who as far as I could tell his name was Counselor. He becomes engaged to Lara (Penélope Cruz) who is as pretty as she is naive. Reiner (Javier Bardem) is a rich friend who claims "Women are an expensive hobby." His girlfriend Malkina (Cameron Diaz) is extremely high maintenance and out of everyone's league. Counselor has a chance to make some big money when he meets a smooth talking, mutual friend, middle man Westray (Brad Pitt) who arranges for Counselor to finance a drug deal. Seems the biggest problem is going to be how to hide the money. Then in the blink of an eye, things go so wrong as now Counselor and Westray try not to star in a Latino snuff film.

The production spends most of the time building up characters with smart dialogue. When the twist happens, this changes the film from a clever drama into an action crime drama that needed better action and to last longer. The film seemed to go down hill at the very moment it should have rocketed. It is a well acted film which I enjoyed mostly for the build up. It just didn't bring it home like it should, clearly a weak screen play adaptation.

Worth a view as a rental.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Sex. No nudity (Cameron Diaz side breast)

I should have know this film was going to be a waste of time from the moment Fassbender talks about being in love... talk about a total miscast! And if that is not enough, you have to keep up with the disjointed plot, which jumps from one scene to another! Great cast, yet my personal opinion is that Penelope Cruz is better suited to her native Spanish films, as she looks very uncomfortable in American films... if you've watched her in films like Jamon Jamon, Broken Embraces and Open Your Eyes, then you will understand what I mean.

I turned the film off after 45 minutes.... take Bruce Lee's advice from the quote above and do something worthwhile with your 117 mins.

4.0 out of 5 stars sazzy, smart, and stylish. 17 Feb 2014
I liked this film very much it was refreshing and compelling. For me it showed a return of form to ridleys work and although the dialogue was at times a little hammy overall the punch the film delivers is very powerful and fassbender gives a steller performance as always, as do many of the cast. It was so refreshing to see a film that's as far removed from the disneyesque majority of homogenized hollywood drivel we are spoon fed year in year out and not a comic book superhero in sight what a relief.

4.0 out of 5 stars A modern classic! 21 April 2014
By Simon B
Never has a film so divided opinion – but I don’t know why? This is an entertaining dark ‘film noir’. I find it difficult to understand the vitriolic criticism it has received. It has elements of a stage play, a series of scenes where motives and meaning are revealed. There are Shakespearian comparisons, soliloquies etc. it is sometimes comic, sometimes grim, but it is always intriguing.

Perhaps it is self-knowing, a bit smug, but I think the divisions it has caused are a testament to its quality and in future it will be regarded as a very good film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly my favourite Ridley Scott movie 9 July 2014
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Possibly my favourite Ridley Scott movie, he directs this all star cast in a brilliant revenge film where a drug deal goes wrong, who with the Mexican cartel.

Fassbender, Pitt & Bardem are brilliant in this story of greed and power. It is so dark and gruesome but it is a film what I won't forget in a hurry and a reminder into why I buy and collect Blu Rays.

Watch it despite negative reviews

Almost great, but somehow never quite finds its rhythm, and at the end of the film you're left sort of wondering what the point was.
