I am an inexperienced gardener who is just about ot move into a new property, and I wish to create a cottage garden. This book is excellent for helping to choose plants so that I can have year-round colour. There are practical projects and guidelines for what you should be doing throughout each month, but these I found these too specific. The book is well illustrated; although there are not photos of the plants, the illustrations give a good idea of each plant. I recommend that you use this along-side "Geoff Hamilton's Cottage Gardens". His book is far more informative, but as few of the plants are illustrated, and the plants are in alphabetical order it is cumbersome for the beginner to use as a planning aid.
