This is an absolute cookery bible, packed with over 400 fantastic recipes. Sections include Soups, Dairy, Vegetables and Salads, Sea and River, Meat, Poultry and Game, Pudding and Desserts, Special Occassions (a treasure trove covering everything from an edwardian breakfast, easter, christenings, romantic dinners, picnics and summery food to halloween and christmas), afternoon tea, good cheer (drinks), jams and pickles, and finally food from the wild.
This is a book of traditional recipes, but all delicious, and fail-safe to make. I recommend the wensleydale soup and the mushroom pudding especially, and all the desserts and cakes.
But there is so much more to this book, it's also stuffed with information, history, cookery tips, vintage adverts, cartoons and poems, ancedotes and articles illustrated with photos and postcards. If you are looking for old-fashioned cookery, with lashings of nostalgia, this is the book for you.
