Product Description

"The Convent of the Pure is a compelling blend of the numinous and the creepy, with a rich, atmospheric setting. I devoured it in a single sitting!"
—Jacqueline Carey, author of Kushiel’s Dart

Secrets and illusions abound in a decaying convent wrapped in dark magic and scented with blood. Portia came to the convent with the ghost of Imogen, the lover she failed to protect in life. Now, the spell casting caste wants to make sure that neither she nor her spirit ever leave.

Portia's ignorance of her own power may be even more deadly than those who conspire against her as she fights to fulfill her sworn duty to protect humankind in a battle against dark illusions and painful realities.

Steeped in the legends of the Nephilim, The Convent of the Pure is the first installment of a steampunk novella trilogy by Sara M. Harvey.

"An intriguing fantasy novella that will move you to tears."
—Michael A. Burstein, Campbell Award-winning author of I Remember the Future

"The Convent of the Pure is a beautifully written page turner, dripping with magic and intrigue. I couldn't put it down. A gifted writer and storyteller, Sara M. Harvey is worthy of a rocket to the top!"
—Fran Friel, Bram Stoker Award finalist and author of Mama's Boy and Other Dark Tales

"Harvey (A Year and a Day) cobbles together gothic steampunk fantasy and lesbian erotica in this romantic, necromantic tale."
—Publishers Weekly, February 2009

3.0 out of 5 stars "The Blood of Angels" series book 1 31 Mar 2012

TCOTP is an interesting blend of fantasy and religion. Heroine Portia is a warrior class Nephilim (an angel/human hybrid) charged with protecting mortals, yet she is something far more than she understands herself to be. Portia continues to hunt demons, yet mourns the loss of her lover Imogen; a fellow Nephilim unexpectedly killed in a routine encounter. But Imogen is not gone; her soul tied to the living world by powerful magic enabling her to remain Portia's constant companion.

There is plenty of intrigue and action, but I found the plot somewhat confusing in places as the different types of angelic beings are introduced, plus parts are quite gory as Portia finds herself in the middle of a ritual which involves carving her chest open. Portia is a predominantly strong lead, yet drugged, manipulated by shape shifting succubae and incubi plus left in ignorance of her own special place in the world, it isn't until the final few chapters that her full potential is explored. The story ends with a great finale and Portia is definitely a character I want to learn more of, and hopefully the full scope of her abilities will be uncovered in book 2 "The Labyrinth of the Dead" and the final part of the trilogy "The Tower of the Forgotten".
