Review

A stunning theatrical knock-out.' Daily Telegraph

Steve Waters' massive achievement is to have made the most important issue of our times into engrossing theatre... an urgent wake-up call presented in compelling human terms. --Guardian

Steve Waters' gripping double bill provides some of the very finest dramatic components London has seen this year...All too believable...Dialogue crackling with sardonic humour...A triumph. Evening Standard

If anthropogenic climate change is the greatest challenge currently facing mankind, then right now Steve Waters The Contingency Plan at the Bush Theatre is the most important artwork in the country. --London Theatre Blog

Genuine political significance...Scary stuff, but scarily good stuff, too. Whatsonstage

Whether seen as stand-alone plays or taken together, Waters' vision of climate change is both grimly convincing and highly entertaining. The Stage

Gripping... The Contingency Plan will definitely put the wind up you. This is ecologically scary and urgent. Gordon Brown should see it. --Independent on Sunday

Product Description

The Contingency Plan is a double-bill of plays (Resilience; and On the Beach) from the frontline of climate change. Frightening, intensely topical and utterly credible it premiered at London's award-winning Bush Theatre. While both plays can stand alone, together they present an epic portrait of an England of the near future, in which massive flooding threatens to sink the east coast. With events seen through the eyes of a bright young climatologist, somewhat reluctantly recruited by an increasingly desperate Government, The Contingency Plan is genuinely chilling as a prediction of our immediate future.

Format:Paperback
This book contains the text of two plays which each stand alone but also together form a single body of work. They explore the effects of climate change on Britain in the near future and also family dynamics and relationships as well as politics in Westminster. It is a powerful piece which works on many levels and gives a plausible scenario for some of the potential devatating effects of severe weather on Britain.
