Product Description

About the Author

During her lifetime, Constance Howard was single-handedly responsible for bringing embroidery into the world of art and fashion. In 1948 she established the department of Embroidery in the Art School at Goldsmith's College, London. From running a part-time course, she became principal lecturer in charge of textiles and fashion - with embroidery as a main subject for Diploma in Art and Design. This course would later become the BA Honours degree course. Constance Howard was a member of the British Craft Centre, of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, the Embroiderers' Guild and the Art Workers' Guild, as well as of the World Crafts Council. Her work has been exhibited widely in Great Britain as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA where she has held many workshops. In recognition of her services to art education, Constance Howard was awarded the MBE in 1975. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Hardcover
I initially borrowed this book from the local library and as I kept renewing it decided that I needed my own copy. I managed to track down a second-hand copy and am now the proud owner of this wonderfully inspiring book. Simple black and white pictures and sparse text means that the book looks plain against the glossy, highly-stylised books published today. But Constance Howard is such an authority on embroidery that every page is a joy and inspiration. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in embroidery, whether beginner or more advanced. Get your hands on a copy.

Format: Paperback
This is a book that was written many years ago and has been republished. It is the only book you need to learn how to create a wide range of embroidery stitches. The illustrations are in black and white, but this does not detract from the clear explanations and creative use of the stitches.
