Absolutely compelling until the very last page, an exceptionally unusual love story - at least for Western readers. The book starts as an almost sociological portrayal of the contemporary society in the Saudi-Arabian theocracy: you simply can't imagine how people live their everyday life in that society where a gender-apartheid rules. Not only live men and women completely in separated worlds, but the religious organization of life even kills nearly every aspect of lust for life. Hypocrisy and abuse of power are only two of the many characteristics Addonia writes of.
The author's language is wonderful and poetic - especially when the love story begins with the secret love letters.
An advice to unpatient readers: keep reading even if maybe the beginning sometimes is a bit too descriptive! You have to be patient until the first love letter is dropped on Al-Nuzla street!!

A superb novel 2 July 2009
By Bluebell TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am left feeling greatly moved by this book. An amazing first novel brimming with heartfelt emotion interlaced with frighteningly authentic descriptions of how those who don't subscribe to extreme Muslim law are treated in Saudi Arabia. It is full of the most beautiful and lyrical writing about love set in a shockingly realistic back-drop of the harsh lives the non-elite, especially non-nationals, endure. I felt outrage at the way women are treated in that country. It's hard to believe that in this day and age such a harsh and unequal regime is tolerated. The writer not only writes superbly well, but also he keeps the reader hooked throughout the book wanting to know how the exciting story will unfold. Wonderful!

Insightful & Moving 6 April 2009
By Clifford Thurlow VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a truly intelligent & humane story that takes us behind the veils and abayas of modern day Saudi Arabia, a land where, author Addonia tells us, even love is against the tenets of Sharia, where if a girl so much as touches the fingertips of a boy he may be imprisoned and she will be publicly caned until the flesh falls from her back. This is the most moving book on this subject I have read since Jacky Trevane's marvellous Fatwa: Living With A Death Threat.

Lovely
I loved this book, I thought it was a beautifully written love story that also served to illuminate the day-to-day reality of a society most of us know little about.
