5.0 out of 5 stars A real labour of Love ... 15 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In recent years there has been an upsurgence in Hoodoo, Rootwork and Conjure in America and many 'Folk Magic' festivals are held there where first hand tuition can be found at the hands of well seasoned practitioners.

The number of books is also on the increase and now in the UK many people are producing their own Oils and Powders, Washes and Saints Oils, based on these traditions and their own understanding of them.

The Lucky Mojo company in America has produced many useful books and source material that are well worth a look at because they are written by African Americans with a great sense of their own first hand knowledge, and often these are family practices that have come to light after many years of being kept secret and only taught to family members only..

This book is a window on to one of those hidden traditions and is a real eye opener, and to be honest it's like looking over somebody's shoulder while they mix oils, and do their thing in the name of Conjure.

This book is written by a woman who has spent every day, every week and every year for decades, practicing her arte and she communicates it well.

Starr Casas is now a veteran practitioner of a style of magic loosely called Southern Conjure, a mix of prayer, herbs, oils and spirit contact which to the outsider appears as having a heavy Catholic influence as Saints are frequently petitioned at various times of the week and year, the Old religions blended with the new ?

However this book isn't about religion and isn't about Christianity as such, it's about the power of prayer and the ancient sources of power found in the Bible, in particular the Old Testament ,some born again pagans might hiccup about this ...my advice is to try it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Conjure as I learnt it...... 11 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I spend several years working with Southern Rootworkers and I must say that Starr Casas makes me nostalgic for those folks. They were hard working down to earth types, who weren't using fancy names or robes but who were naturally in tune with the herbs and roots, the earth and God. Reading Casas' unpretentious way of writing is a breath of fresh air and I am sure in time to come her work will gain further recognition.

When working with books like this you need a healthy dose of common sense, and if the reader doesn't already have it then Casas surely gives it to them with practical advice and no-nonsense straight talk. As always with books in this genre, some of the "recipes" are left for you to fully quantify, but this is normal. No professional rootworker is gonna give all their secrets away, and after all there are more than enough freely given here to begin with.

I look forward to your next book Momma Starr! This one certainly has been a pleasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING...Can't even put into words! 21 April 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Okay, let me start by saying that I am not new to Hoodoo, but always looking to learn. I have a collection of books on the subject and all are good in their own right, but I have to be honest this is one of THE BEST conjure/Hoodoo books I have to date! I recognize that each conjurer/worker has their own style. Starr has a style and way of writing that feels like you are working with her one on one. I can't believe how much information she shares in this book! There is work I had heard of but never tried because I did not know how. I believe that if you don't know then you should not "dip and dabble" in conjure/Hoodoo until you know what you are doing. The Conjure Workbook, breaks it down. Starr give the "what", the "why" and the "how". Truly the sign of a real teacher who wants to forward the knowledge of authentic conjure/Hoodoo. I highly recommend this book for all who are interested in conjure/Hoodoo. I want to be clear, I am not one who gushes over people "just because" they wrote a book, but I am someone who appreciates and respects authenticity, knowledge and learning. If you are the same, this is the book for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a whole lot of COMMON SENSE! 11 May 2013
By Michael Banuelos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to say that Starr has an amazing book here. I absolutely love it. She provides you with so much information and practical insight that you feel like you are working alongside her.

I think what I enjoyed most about this book was how down to earth she is and how she couldn't reiterate enough to use Common Sense! Some quotes that stood out to me while reading:

"The thing is you can't throw the baby out with the bath water if you want to be a Conjurer. The Bible is the meat of Conjure; it is the power behind the work. Some would argue this point and that is their right to do so."

"Always remember use what you have and don't limit yourself by what you don't have. That is what Conjure work is all about."

"You only need a little here and there because a little always goes a long way in Conjure work just like when you're cooking."

I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because there was one thing that really bothered me about the book. That was the lack of editing. It seemed like there was something misspelled or grammar errors on almost every page. The content though is absolutely amazing and worth overlooking such errors.

This is definitely a book that I am glad that I purchased, one of those books that you will read over and over again. If you are thinking about purchasing this book then I would highly suggest that you do! So grateful for Starr and the work that she does. Thank You!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real old school conjure. 26 Oct 2013
By Priestess Auset Ra Amen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Its really refreshing to read a book based on actually old school southern conjure, written by an actual conjurer. this book will take you into southern conjure and folk magik. I felt like I was stepping back in time reading this book, its like a skeleton key course work. the author was very detailed in her conjure rituals, the one with the white candle going over your body to pick up negative energy works like a charm, and I for one have never seen that taught anywhere else. I also shared some of the authors frustrations on the rampant flooding of the market on watered down conjure with folks who have no clue as to what conjure really is. but the author has to understand in this age of Aquarius knowledge must be made know to the masses as these paths were cloaked in secrecy. I am very grateful this info is written about from an actual practitioner who grew up in the tradition. Mrs Casas has written an outstanding book that will no doubt stand the test of time. if you want to learn ole school southern conjure then this is the book for you. although personally I don't work with the saints or the religious factor choosing instead to incorporate Orisha and other deities to call on to assist me with my conjure work, non the less using the techniques in this book is very effective in obtaining that which you so desire, this is root working at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting to the Root of the issue. 8 Sep 2013
By Douglas E. Helvie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I just completed Momma Starr Casas' "The Conjure Workbook Volume 1: Working The Root," and was quite pleased with the information contained within the wonderful tome of old Southern Conjure. I was delighted at how engaging her writing style is; when reading her book I felt like I was sitting at her kitchen table and being taught by someone that truly walked her walk and talked her talk. When she teaches she is coming from a place where her tradition of Southern Conjure is both spiritually and energetically connected to the Christian Bible, and in that she makes no apologies. However where possible she does note that the individual can inject their own spiritual beliefs into the work, but she does remind the reader of how strong her work has been while operating from the perspective of the Bible. I personally got a lot out of the book and would highly recommend it to both Christian & non-Christian practitioners a like. Momma Starr Casas, thank you for this wonderful and insightful trip down the road of Southern Conjure! You do your system proud.

Blessings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Southern Conjure beginners book 12 Mar 2014
By Charity Bedell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Conjure Workbook Volume 1: Working the Root is an excellent tome on Southern Conjure work. When I picked up this tome I knew that it was going to be full of Christian mysticism and biblical references. That is what Hoodoo and conjure is. The Southern Hoodoo and conjure traditions are a mixture of folk beliefs from pre-slave days in Africa and the various Christian faiths in the south. This was how the slaves were able to hold on to a bit of their previous culture and identity.

If those who are looking to learn about Hoodoo and conjure work are expecting information to come from a pagan perspective and are looking at this work they will be disappointed. Mama Starr is very clear about her roots and the roots of Southern Conjure which are in Christian belief systems of the south. While she does say that you can be of any belief system and still work the spells and rituals she provides, unless you respect the Bible and understand that it is filled with lore, spells, and practices you will not get anything out of this book.

The author begins the book by discussing the work of ancestors. Here the author begins explaining one of the core concepts and beliefs across Conjure/Hoodoo/Rootwork traditions. There is an overall belief in an existence of an afterlife and that our ancestors will be there to answer us. The author starts by describing how they help us and work with us and finally ends with setting up an altar to venerate and pray to your ancestors.

I mentioned the importance of respect for the Bible as a sacred text and as a book of power as that is the second topic discussed in the book. As I said early on the author is clear in that this book is a southern conjure book which is going to have referenced to the Bible in there. Most of the references are in the Old Testament but they are still Bible references.

After working with the ancestors is covered, crafting altars and work spaces is discussed, and the Bible is mentioned as an important source the Author gets into the spirits and beings that are often worked with in her practice of Hoodoo. Prior to reading this book I was aware of the work with the archangels and the saints. Here I learned of new spirits and beings also associated with Conjure as well as how we can even work with the prophets in the bible.

Each being mentioned came with several different prayers and ways that you can work with them. These early workings are here to give you an idea about the powers each spirit has. These workings also introduce you to the concepts of repeating works, and how actual effort is put into the work. The author makes it clear that these things are repeated several times for effectiveness.

As the book continues the author mentions and focuses on another core belief in rootworking traditions. That belief and practice is one of divination. Starr provides many different ways of working divination including a very traditional practice of reading the bones. While the actual practice of bone reading is not discussed, the author does include its history of use. The author included a photo of her own bone set.

As the book continues the author continues an easy to follow step by step instruction on workings. The author also continues her straight talk. The author is very serious about their work and their tradition. Throughout the book the author mentions how some of these works are dangerous and are not to be simply played with. She does this not to discourage people from doing these works, but to encourage people to take the work seriously.

The author does speak only of their own tradition and practices. While the author does give you all the information you need to create your own Hoodoo/Conjure practice she does encourage you to find an actual teacher to learn more complex works. As an example the author explains why some packet spells written by other authors aren't as effective as they could be because of folding the paper of the packet in a different manner than she was taught with an explanation of why the other method may actually backfire.

This book is filled with practical information. With the authors attitude, explanations, and the step by step processes in the book the tome The Conjure Workbook volume 1: Working the Root provides everything you need to know in order to effective start working your own spells and rituals. By working the spells in the book you develop understanding of associations and correspondences which can be useful in creating your own effective spells.
