3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but predictable 21 Aug 2010
By Rachel
Format:Paperback
I read the first book in this series, "The Shunning", over a year ago and as a result of this had forgotten a lot of the details. I've also read several other Amish-themed books between then and now and have established my views on who the best authors are in this genre and which series is my favourite. Unfortunately, this book isn't among them. As much as I enjoyed the first book and all of its drama and angst, this one just seemed unnecessarily over-dramatic and cliched. Although I wanted to read about Katie meeting her birth-mother and being reunited with her lost love, I didn't feel so connected to her and there were several passages devoted to the points of view of the servants in her birth-mother's house - many of whom were, bizarrely, English. Was it typical to have English servants in an NY home in 1997? Particularly ones who appeared to have stepped out of an Agatha Christie novel? I did enjoy reading about the "imposter" and wondering whether Katie would ever get to meet Lydia face-to-face (although considering the predictability of this novel, it was rather obvious that this would eventually happen) but I felt that this series lost its charm once it was no longer based in Hickory Hollow. I tend to prefer the Amish novels that focus on people who embrace their beliefs, rather than those who escape the lifestyle. I will read the last book in the trilogy as I checked it out of the library last week, but I definitely prefer Lewis's "Abram's Daughters" series to this one. But to give the author credit, this trilogy was her first and it's obvious that her writing has grown immensely since this was published.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SERIES 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I read the whole series. The story was so realistic and interesting. I read the last book slow because I didn't want it to end. Ican't wait for Beverly Lewis's next book. She writes so well. Just enough details to make it interesting.

By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I had the pleasure of visiting Lancaster Co. this summer and then the pleasure of reading not only The Confession but The Shunning and was really suprised to find that alot of what I saw of Lancaster Co. was true and as I read each book I could imagine being right there with the characters. I can't wait to read The Reckoning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming 14 Jun 1999

Format:Paperback
I truly enjoyed this book and the first book in the Heritage of Lancaster County series. Lewis makes the community come alive for the reader. I felt as if I were a member of the community attending church meetings and baking bread. I can't wait to read The Reckoning.

I ordered the Beverly Lewis books, The Shunning, and The Confession, through Avon just to have something to read in my spare time. Once I started reading I couldn't stop. The Confession was truly touching and I can't wait to find The Reckoning so I can see how things turn out for Katie.

Mrs. Lewis story about "Amish" raised Katherine brought to mind the reality of confusion that many people, Amish, Baptist or whatever, may have with believing in every doctrine, rule or way they have been taught from birth. Through this wonderful book, she so brilliantly conveys the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the freedom that comes with that relationship. I, too, am sitting on the edge of my chair, waiting for the continued story of Katherine's new life, as mistress of Mayfield; young, vulnerable woman needing acceptance and love and daughter of two mothers, one a brief memory and the other feeling forlorn and rejected. Please, please, publish #3 real soon!

I finished the first book, The Shunning, only to feel completely lost and frustrated...surely this was a cruel hoax....it could not be ending, there must be more. I was not disappointed! There WAS more, indeed, in this second book! Wow! For the first time in all my reading days, I found it completely impossible to resist frantically searching through the pages to be sure this or that did, in fact, happen...things just could NOT go on as they were...I could not wait to find out by reading a page at a time...I had to frantically search the pages until I knew... The continuation of the story of Katherine, Laura, her Amish family, Mary, and the wise old woman...and the bishop...and her true love...this story took so many strange turns and curves, it was impossible to second guess the author. Suspense ruled! Bev Lewis never let me wander from the story line....how could I? I practically read the book straight through! It was just glued to my hands and would NOT go down until I was done. Book #3? PLEEEEEZE!!
