Product Description

China, 1929. For years Lydia Ivanova believed her father was killed by the Bolsheviks. But when she learns he is captive in Stalin-controlled Russia, the fiery-haired girl is willing to leave everything behind - even her Chinese lover, Chang An Lo. Journeying with her half-brother Alexei, Lydia begins a dangerous search. Tension grows between the two, for while Alexei is searching for his past, Lydia is looking for her future. But when Alexei disappears, Lydia is left almost penniless in Soviet Russia - and doubting the choices she has made. Surrounded by dangers, she searches for information and soon finds herself entangled with a Russian officer. But Chang An Lo has not forgotten Lydia. He knows things about her father that she does not. And while he races to protect her, she is prepared to risk treacherous consequences to discover the truth . . .

Fantastic Fiction 16 Aug 2009
By Booklover TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I have only recently discovered Kate Furnivall and having now read the Concubine books and Under a Blood Red Sky I am hooked!
I am amazed at how some people read a work of fiction and then are critical about lack of historical facts or that the story contains implausible elements. It is FICTION based in a historical context and it is wonderful escapism which I feel is well written to appeal to the majority. It is not pretending to be an in-depth insight into the early days of the USSR so if that is what you are looking for don't buy it. Having said that, I found it interesting to read a book set in a period of time that I knew little about (I am usually a medieval history reader!)
The characters are well portrayed and I found myself wondering what awful twists and turns they could get out of next and the pace of the book is just right.
The one thing I would warn readers is that Amazon are selling the American versions of this and Under a Blood Red Sky (Girl from Junchow & The Red Scarf). I nearly got caught out by buying them as in their wisdom Amazon have not given a synopsis of the American versions or actually said that they are the same books... Grrr.

I was so lost in the freezing bleakness of 1930s Moscow this morning, that I didn't realise I was getting burnt sitting out in my garden reading.

Although the backdrop to this novel is the cold, harsh reality of Stalin's Russia, its characters could not be more strong or spirited. As always with Kate Furnivall's novels, the plot strands weave together unnoticeably until the reader is totally snared. The ending to this book is spectacular, both visually and emotionally. You will not forget it in a hurry.

If you have read The Russian Concubine, you will love being swept up in the continuation of Lydia and Chang's adventure. If you haven't read it, you will be desperate to know what came before The Concubine's Secret.

Best read this year 8 July 2009
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books I've read this year. I loved it. I bought it in a double pack in WHSmith - buy The Concubine's Secret, get The Russian Concubine free - even though I had already read and loved The Russian Concubine. Furnivall has gone from strength to strength, because this sequel is even better than the original. It is more focused and more tightly constructed but with the same beautiful talent for creating vivid characters that we really care about. A brilliant read. I was up till all hours finishing it when I should have been asleep - I couldn't put it down. Had to know what the wonderful Lydia would do next. There are surprises and heart-breaking twists that kept me on the edge of my seat, and as always with Furnivall's books, the ending left me wanting more. I am already eagerly awaiting her next one.

Curiously compelling
When The Russian Concubine was offered to me a while ago, I dismissed it, rather piously, as a 'women only' historical romance. Read more
