I am new to bike with less than a year experience. Just like everyone, I want to gain more knowledge and experience to be able to repair my bikes. I have bought a few books of bike reapir and maintenance from Amazon. Most of them are just OK.

"The Complete Do it Yourself Bike Book by Mel Allwood" is the best bike book that I have bought. It has everything I want to know about biking with pictures. All contents are very useful. When I want to know something about my bike, I pick up this book first. It has good explanations, additional information, pictures, tips, add on equipment, etc. If I have to choose only one bike book with me , "The Complete Do it Yourself Bike Book by Mel Allwood" is my selection.

One drawback of this book is that the font is a bit too small for me.

At the outset this book is very good, in fact, excellent. However, the size of the print used for this book is TOO SMALL for comfortable reading. This spoils what is otherwise a brilliant book. I totally agree with the other reviewer who makes this point. I have asked Carlton books to look at this as I believe it would be to everyone's advantage if they addressed this.

Having said that, in the short time I have had it I have learnt some excellent tips on keeping your bike set up safely and correctly. I consider myself as having a reasonable knowledge of the workings and maintenance of bikes, but this book has already made me aware of things I didn't know. The text is informative and covers many areas that similar books omit. The pictures are good too.

With regard to the text size I wouldn't be surprised if this one point alone puts off some people from buying it and that's a shame. It certainly spoils my enjoyment of this book. Let's hope the publishers make this excellent book brilliant!.

I borrowed this book from my local library and was very impressed with the content's but the size of the print is far to small, i have to use a magnifier to read some of it. Personally i think the book should have been in a larger format then i would have given it a 10 out of 10 score, at the moment i rate it as 5 out of 10. The photo's are excellent and very clear. It's a good job i have only borrowed it, i would definatley have bought it if i could have read it without the magnifier.

I am recent convert to cycling and know nothing about maintenance whatsoever or how to fix minor problems on my bike. This book however should resolve these issues. Clear instructions and a good step by step guide with photos. Okay, the print is small, but the paper is brilliant white, good quality and the ink is black so it is easily read despite the size. The main issue with print size though is if you are working on your bike you won't be able to have the book on the floor next to you to guide you as the print is too small. However, a little patience and reading the instructions till you understand them will overcome this.

It has recommendations for various accessories, guides to what to buy, and goes from basic maintenance to advanced (I wouldn't want to fiddle around with the rear hub of my wheel!). Over all, good book and very accessible. Don't be put off by the small print size, it is perfectly legible and very clear.

This book is great for beginners and more experienced cyclists alike. It has a really good step for step guide with photo's on how to service and fix any part on your bicycle, whether it's a road or mountain bike. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking at increasing their knowledge of how their bicycle works and how to look after it yourself. It's a lot cheaper than taking it to the bike shop everytime.

The book is A5 size and about 1/2 inch thick, so could easily be taken with on any trips.

The only down side is that the text is really small, but I can understand that it's so that each section can fit on to 1 page and to keep the book nice and compact.

This has given me the confidence to tackle most jobs on my bike, and has already saved me more than the book cost many times over (in servicing costs). I'm also already feeling the benefits in terms of being able to adjust and set my bike up to suit me...
