Product Description

Its closely observed portrayal of what goes on in the

corridors of power has given me hours of pure joy

" (Rt Hon. Margaret Thatcher MP)

We have had diaries from other Cabinet Ministers, but none I

think which have been quite so illuminating... It is a

fascinating diary... It is shorter than Barbara Castle's... and

although it is rather more accurate than Dick Crossman's, it

is distinctly funnier

" (Lord Allen of Abbeydale (formerly Permanent Secretary at the Home Office) The Times)

It has an entertainment and educational value which is

unique. It is uproariously funny and passes the acid test of

becoming more amusing at every subsequent reading... I will

go so far as to claim that in the characters of Jim Hacker and

Sir Humphrey Appleby, Messrs Lynn and Jay have created

something as immortal as P.G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster

and Jeeves

" (Brian Walden The Standard) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars not humor but a manual for survival 6 Oct 2000
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Ever since first seeing the TV series in the early 1980's, and having bought the two books as soon as they were published, Yes Minister has become my favourite management textbook on the political games played in large organisations.
It's worth noting that these books and videos have been around for 20 years and have not dated at all.
A "must read" for anyone working in a large organisation, public or private.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still relevant over 20 years on. 20 Feb 2006
I believe the previous reviewers have neatly summarised my own feelings, but, I must add, as an employee of the Australian Public (Civil) Service, both the book and the show have additional relevance with regards to my employment situation. It is hard not to read the book or watch the shows without sensing an air or familiarity, in which case the book/show becomes almost an indictment, albeit a very humorous one. Strongly recommended, especially for those seeking a humorous yet accurate representation of the workings (machinations and manipulations), as nonsensical as they are, of a large Government Department.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great collection 1 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Superb collection of Yes Minister for the Kindle (I wish they would release Yes Prime Minister on Kindle at the time of writing it isn't available and if you want to carry on the series you don't have a Kindle option at the moment).

The one thing letting it down is the size/quality of the printed reproductions of letters/memos throughout the book, they are in my opinion too small even when you zoom into them individually and are often hard to read. Annoyingly they sometimes have the content of the letter/memo reproduced seperately to read whilst othertimes they don't (the print version was similar but the size wasn't an issue with that).

I've also not been able to use the inbook references throughout the chapters so your left to manually flick forward and backward (this could just be me being a doofus though!).

Great stories let down by a lacklustre Kindle edition sadly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Any fan of the series would love this set. It is hilariously funny and witty - the content just doesn't seem to date! Watching the television series I missed many of the more subtle digs but found that with these CD's I was able to concentrate on the speach and as a result have a much deeper appreciation for the superb script. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still spot on... 16 Dec 2004
Even after all these years it is impossible not to see the parallels. Truly the sign of great comedy. Buy this and its companion - Yes Prime Minister. Very highly recommended, even alongside the TV series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes for Yes Minister! 23 May 2011
Clever, thought provoking and scarily relevent still to the political cock-ups and conspiracies of today. Less laugh a minute than the tv series, but that's not the point of this book. There is much more scope here to delve into Hackers eternal struggle with the Civil Service and his constant lurch from catastrophe to controversy. An excellent read for anyone with a brain that they are willing to use.

Another book I lost over the years, more likely been borrowed by a friend and never returned. Could never forget the laughs I had first watching the shows, then as if Paul Eddington (RIP, old man!) and co were reading out the lines for me when reading the book. British humour at its best! And should be made a must-read for any students who're mildly interested in politics. We don't have to worry about the odd ones who may want to venture into politics later--they will pick it up before they reach 16, that is, old enough to make a speech at the Conservatives national conference :)

Ordered this copy from the dealer through Amazon. The book arrived very fast and in better than expected condition.

Never has the Civil Services been subjected to such transparency, of course, in the name of humour. Under the cover of witty liners, the book sought to explain the rationale (or irrational) of the modern politics we witnessed together ¨C how international as well as domestic policies are formed. It is highly entertaining to read how each characters wriggled out of the mess created in each story. A book to be read by all citizens (to know how they are being screwed by the politicians), and a book to be read by all politicians (to know how they are being screwed by themselves). And certainly a book, which I would describe as ¡°simply delicious !¡±

5.0 out of 5 stars a god entertaining read
The book is as entertaining as the TV series, and begs the question as to how true to reality is it.
