Product Description

Review

"This collection is, above all, fun to read, full as it is of memorable high jinks. . . . There is a fertility of invention not only in incident but in writing itself . . . Auden was always a virtuoso, something of a showoff--and it is a pleasure to watch him showing off."--Los Angeles Times,

Format: Hardcover
This is one of the greatest of all collections of libretti, by any poet of any time.
It has the expected pieces - Paul Bunyan, The Rake's Progress,
the two operas for Henze, but also Delia (a masque), Love's Labours' Lost (for N Nabokov)
and the gloriously appended translation of The Magic Flute. (Other staightforward
translations are easliy avalable elsewhere.) The writing is unfailingly dazzling. But the activity in the margins
is also so interesting: documentary film texts, radio texts, a brilliant, scurrilously camp, aptly named 'Queen's Masque' for Kallman's 22nd birthday, insertions for the 13c Play of Daniel and so forth. Auden's Prefaces are utterly fascinating; but so too are the meticulous notes by Edward Mendelsohn - magnifiet scholarship. The Volume is, as always, immacutaly produced. Buy! Buy! Buy!
