Quite a few of the grow-your-own books that I've seen assume a certain amount of gardening knowledge. For the complete novice, such books can seem a little overwhelming, with lots of fancy-sounding terms that remain a mystery. However, this book explains everything very clearly, giving the beginner a fighting chance of learning what a 'tilth' is, and what on earth 'bolting' means.

The book is laid out very clearly, with excellent photographs that are both useful and inspiring. I particularly like the way the pages are laid out for each vegetable, giving all the information you need in a very accessible way.

All in all, one of the best veg growing books that I've come across. I'll be referring to it for years to come - unless my copy is eaten by slugs like everything else in my garden!

A complete guide 16 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is very good for beginners to vegetable growing. It lists everything you need to know from sowing, planting and harvesting times to vegetables good for shade/sun and time taken for vegetables to grow. It also covers pests/compost making/veg in containers. It has lots of photos and describes each vegetable and its requirements. It's also useful for planning your vegetable year. Although a gardener for a long time, I am new to vegetable growing and I find this book indispensable, I love it! If you want something that lists lots of different vegetable varieties then I suggest reading a seed catalogue.

My girlfriend / partners mum bought this book for my Birthday as i'd recently prepared a plot of land in my garden to grow vegetables.

This has been so helpful to me and I refer to it daily!

For a beginner like myslef, this book is fantastic and I would definitely reccomend it to any other inexperienced gardeners.

The first section tells you the best ways to prepare your plot etc before you plant seeds and the second half of the book has indepth descriptions of a pretty comprehensive list of vegetables and herbs listing everything from the sowing and germination through to harvesting and every step in between.

Also has handy hints and problem solvers for each different vegetable...

A must buy for any up and coming gardener!

NIce pictures.
Lots of nice pictures but otherwise very thin on content. Gets you in the mood to grow, but if you are a beginner I would (and continue) to recommend Joy Larkcom.
