Toy Story
There is greatness in a film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--you smile at the spell it puts you into and are refreshed, and not a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic" and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing as it reawakens the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humour--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar "For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film". In other words, this movie is great. --Doug Thomas

Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the handful of other great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, Toy Story. Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living for forever. Toy Story 2 was deservedly a huge box-office success. --Doug Thomas

Toy Story 3
What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing--adults and children alike, whether they've seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy's toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he's getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys' worries that they'll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they've earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don't turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o'-Huggin' (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar's 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it's Pixar's uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humour in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

An excellent box set featuring toy story 1, 2 and 3 on blu ray. I don't think the films themselves need much of a review as it's unlikely you're buying all three films if you haven't seen at least one of them. However if that is the case, then you're making a very good choice. The films have the perfect blend of great characters (with great voice acting), strong storytelling, emotion and laughs. I wasn't sure how they could keep the series going for the third film, but it certainly doesn't disappoint.

All three films look absolutely fantastic, a definite step up from their DVD counterparts. Each film comes with a ton of extra materials for those who are interested in behind the scenes stuff. The three films come in individual normal sized blu ray cases - not one case with all of the films or the thin cases, and so they sit nicely with my other blu rays.

For those that would like to know, Toy Story 1 & 2 has subtitles in English, French, Dutch and Hungarian. Toy story 3 has subtitles in just English and Dutch.

The one thing to remember with these films is that they are not just for kids; I certainly don't mind watching them on my own! Maybe I'm a big kid.

A superb box set and great fun for children and all the family! Everyone will enjoy these movies even those who haven't seen them.

In the Blu ray box set you get Toy Story 1 (1 Disc), Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 (2 discs, extra bonus feature disc) all in Blu ray. Each Blu ray movie is in a separate case unlike in some box sets where all the movies are in one slipcase.

I would seriously recommend spending a couple of pounds more getting this Blu ray box set rather than the DVD box set as these films were made for Blu ray and the quality is much better than you would get on DVD. At this price you get all 3 movies for less than £10 each! It's quite a bargain considering that they cost more if you buy them separately.

Of course we all know how good the Toy Story films are but they are made that bit extra special on blu ray. Not only are you treated to a fantastic picture in hi-def but because of the huge capacity of blu rays you given a large selction of extras to watch, all the standard extras from the ddvs as well as a few special ones for the blu ray release only. All in all an execllent box set.

Toy Story 1, 2 and 3 are all fantastic films for the kids and grown ups, and now you can own all 3 in this Blu-ray box set.

It's a basic, straight to the point no frills box set. All 3 films in their seperate Blu-ray cases packed together in a cardboard sleeve, it's really that simple. The discs have tonnes of bonus footage and deleted scenes etc, and Toy Story 3 actually comes with an extra disc with even more special features to feast upon.

You can really see the Blu-ray picture quality shine through in all 3 films, particularly Toy Story 3. The improvement in computer-generated imagery (CGI) animation over the years is phenomenol, however the remastering for the first 2 films is still stunning and a huge improvement over the original DVD releases. All three films are a real treat on the eyes.

It's the perfect gift, go on, treat someone special... or just treat yourself... like I did!

Enjoy.

If you're looking for great, family-friendly entertainment, then this Toy Story triple boxset is definitely the thing for you!

Featuring all three of the fantastic Toy Story movies, you'll be able to laugh and cry along with the likes of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Rex, Ham, Slinky and the gang as you watch not only the toy stars develop into surprisingly well-rounded characters, but also the technology improve until the last film is a visual delight to behold in HD!

Hilarious, moving, well-written (the original movie is scripted by Joss Whedon of Buffy fame!), exciting and terrifying, I challenge even the hardest heart not to enjoy the heck out of these brilliant films!

This is a superb three disc blu ray set. The picture quality is phenominal. I was blown away with the detail albeit I do have a blu ray player and 3d tv. Word of warning - when I put the disc in, it did warn me that the disc will not always play on older blu ray players. Mine is less than 6 months old and even so it took a while to load. If you do have an older player can you update the firmware? Well worth the wait!

I think everyone pretty much knows the "story" so I will not elaborate. Needless to say my 2 yr old daughter loves it. I think part of the attraction is the vibrant colours, they really come out of the screen. Each disc is over an hr and there is lots of bonus material on there. You also get some free Disney points that you can exchange for stickers, bags etc or you can collect more for other higher value gifts.

Overall, I think this is a great purchase for any young child, and without doubt, the quality and depth of the blu ray disc is far superior to the DVD disc set. Highly recommended.
