I first saw this series when it was shown on British TV in about 1971 and I have been wanting to see it again ever since. In this three-disc DVD set there are twenty six, twenty three minute episodes, plus extras. The series is narrated by actor Robert Ryan.
The story of World War One is told mostly in chronological order but each episode goes into detail about certain aspects and landmarks of the war. There are episodes concerning the battles of Verdun, Jutland and Gallipoli as well as the effect that the war was having behind the lines amongst the civillian population, not to mention the Russian revolution. This being an American production, there is great emphasis on America before she joined in; the Lusitania, the war with Mexico and Germany's involvement there. We also get the aftermath of war and the restlessness that led to the rise of Fascism.
On the debit side, this series is not quite as comprenensive as it could be; the battles of Ypres and the Somme are only mentioned in passing. I doubt that any one product could ever tell the whole story of The Great War but for anyone with more than a passing interest in the subject then this series is as good as any.
