Abbado was influenced by Furtwangler ( read my review Furtwangler's legacy box set, for more about that conductor), so was Barenboim and Thielemann. But as Gramophone 2012 states " Abbado has always got the big picture in view-the large concept and landscape of a piece in the way that is quite unique to him." His sound world was Italianite, not Germanic; orchestral colouring which spoke of sun, bright skies, but with dark weather, with a lighter sheen. He had a unique sound often with swift tempi and clarity.(see my reviews of the CD's below.)

The cardboard box set, has another box inside, with a lid on top. Smallish box for 39 CDs. One side has pictures of the sleeves, the other, CD numbers and works played. Sony box sets are renowned for their quality, like Toscanini RCA collection, Reiner, Colin Davis, Verdi and Wagner at the Met Box sets and Verdi great recordings. The sleeves are the originals. Behind, the Composer, music to be played and track numbers, but no CD number. That is found on the side of the box, and on the CD itself. The CD is white like the lid of the box, with Claudio Abbado and composer in red, music and orchestra with black wording, plus CD number. The CD's have been remastered this year from the original analogue tapes using 24bit/96kHz technology. Also, when you are dealing with Sony classic CDs, the sound, as with Decca, is always good. The booklet is in English, German and French. Track listings with a photo's of the Sleeves and Abbado. But no translations into English of songs and operas or CD- Rom. Also, an essay" I am Claudio to everyone", and it goes into his philosophy on music making, and about his psychological make up.

Although the price of this set has increased since it was issued, it still remains one of this year's great bargains. The majority of the performances feature the Chicago Symphony or the Berlin Philharmonic.

i haven't played it all yet, but everything that has been sampled so far has been at least excellent. There are great performances of some things that are not immediately associated with Abbado, such as Dvorak (The Noon-day Witch is stunning).

The Simon Boccanegra is a live recording from the Vienna State Opera. The prompter is over-much in evidence (at least through headphones) and Renato Bruson sounds a bit weedy in places. The discs, but not the booklet, calls him Renata. In addition, the track names for disc one - but not the booklet - are for I Vespri Siciliani and not for Simon Boccanegra. It's things like this that suggest that not enough effort has gone into a proper presentation of a great collection of performances. It would also have been appreciated if the individual disc covers had been numbered to tie-in with the booklet.

Quibbles aside, there is treasure in this box, particularly the Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky.

Sony has the habit of cutting so that they can more box instead of doing justice to one of the world greatest conductor. The booklet contain nothing about the music, gone that far the CD has number to locate n the box set and no libretto and translation.Sony expect the potential purchasers to understand Russian and drink Vodka, eat caviar and smoke Cuban cigar.I am sure that many would prefer text and translation and pay increase price. The best Sony muse 30 years out in of music. As the music contained in the box set there is no complain listen to Mussorgsky St.John on the bare mountain version Bass-baritone on CD 12and compare it original version on CD 14track 6 and if you are not impressed then I will eat my hat without salt and peeper. The first cd track 1 is the starter to listen excellent music to local shop.Ultrarunner give an excellent review of this box set 5 stars for music and one star for all those involved in marketing this box set.An excellent tea in a cracked mug wit lipstick in the corner is the only way I can describe this box.Highly recoomended.........for the music.
