BBC Review

Few groups epitomise the term 'important' like gospel infused Chicagoan soul outfit The Impressions. This two-disc set assembles the Curtis Mayfield helmed line-up's seven inches for ABC Paramount records with album tracks, pleasing the collector and more casual listener at the same time.

The Impressions sound tracked the social upheaval of the 60s, brought Mayfield and his distinctive falsetto to the spotlight, and inspired a wealth of harmony groups around the world. Yet even if you ignore all that, you're left with a series of some of the sweetest soul sides ever heard.

Rhythmically diverse, the cuts range from shimmying Latin tinged ballads to Motown era stomps and funkier numbers. As his lyrics take on more political significance Curtis' voice moves from childlike purity to the hipper ballsier delivery familiar from his later solo work.

It's impossible to fault early hits Gypsy Woman and I'm The One Who Loves You (for the latter, Mayfield's voice is suited perfectly to the patient best friend of a lady who prefers meaner men).

However, uplifting positivity was also a big part of their message. For every forlorn lover's lament there's an exhortation of civil rights encouragement (Rolling On or We're A Winner - a clear ancestor of Curtis' Move On Up) and even transplanted hymns (Amen).

Another, oft ignored, aspect of the group's legacy was their pivotal influence in Jamaica. Their effect on the Wailers is common knowledge (People Get Ready was reshaped into One Love). But Impressions tunes also became staples for high-register reggae singers including Milton Henry, Cornel Campbell, Junior Murvin and Slim Smith.

There is the odd surplus to requirements novelty piece like Twist And Limbo; and disc two is not quite as powerful as disc one - though still well worth a spin. Nonetheless, these songs will plant a cornerstone in your collection without any hunting for scratchy old 45s. --Angus Taylor

Containing all The Impressions' 45 A and B sides from 1961 to 1968 this is an absolutely essential purchase for any fan of classic 1960s soul, the sublime harmonies of The Impressions or Curtis Mayfield's songwriting. 60 tracks over 2 discs and no filler!

The Wheel goes round. 13 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
i bought "i made a mistake\i'm so proud" on abc from a 2nd hand record shop on hyde road manchester for a tanner a thousand years ago and it was love on first hearing...made me a star in my class...2 or 3 years later i was one of the nuts in a 22 inch vented silver jacket flipping off the walls in the twisted wheel all nighter to the tunes of "you've been cheating" and "i can't satisfy" and i've got to throw in gene chandler's "nothing can stop me" a real monster at the time...spun you through the floor...soul...that was the word for it then...there was no other word to describe it...nowadays people half my age and younger say northern...but it's soul...that's the word for it...and that's exactly what you get on these 2 discs...in those early days this was rarefied stuff never mind angus in the bbc review making it all so pat...the bbc had no idea whatsoever of it...i doubt if one tune on the wheel menu was ever played by the bbc except years and years later...tamla though was unstoppable...i would also like to stir into his pap something else...all the soul acts and groups came from a socially divided and deprived background as were their audience...here it was white working class kids with nothing who saw straight through colour bar and welcomed in innocent joy the soul into their hearts never to leave it...hear yea.

Lasting Impressions 6 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD
During the 60's, The Impressions were always my number one "soul" group. From Gypsy Woman to You've Been Cheatin' to me they represented the pinnacle of soul music. Their tight almost sparse arrangements brought out the best in the vocal arrangements coupled with Mayfield's lyrics. A case of less is more.
The BBC review says most of what needs to be said about this collection. CD2 is the weaker of the 2 in my opinion but it is still good music.
If you like Seal's version of Its Alright then you will like this collection.
I'm surprised that more of Mayfield's work isn't covered by current artistes - it would save us having to listen to mediocre fillers on cds included by virtue of the fact that the singer wrote them. Come on you aspiring soul/rnb singers look back into the vaults and give us a treat.
