I haven't regretted ordering this book. The edition by John Sloan is excellent. All of Oscar Wilde's tales are included. The first book of tales to be published in Wilde's lifetime was The Happy Prince and Other Tales, but here it appears second because the stories included in Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories were written earlier, and they appeared on periodicals. But the chosen chronological method of ordering the tales books allows us to appreciate fully the way in which the author's storytelling evolved and matured. The early stories are more humorous and lighthearted in tone, and gradually there is an increasing introduction of fairy tale motif and myth, culminating in the 'paradoxical Christian' prose poems included at the very end. Most people love Oscar Wilde's plays, but the people who knew him all remarked that his storytelling gifts were remarkable, and here is good proof. These stories are full with secrets and mysteries and suggestions, they are rooted in ancient tales but thoroughly modern in an style that is said to resemble Baudelaire and Flaubert.

Brilliant little volume of Wilde masterpieces, even both versions of Salome English and the French. Refreshing to read other work from the masters pen, rather than the usual plays, good though they are.

I read this book having been deeply impressed and mesmerised by Wilde's A Picture of Dorian Gray: this collection of short stories by Wilde left me even more hungry to read more of his work! There is only one story which seems to be similar to A Picture of Dorian Gray and in almost a sort of prelude to the book itself -this being contestable. Nonetheless, the remaining stories are brilliant, magical fables that bring out Wilde's incredible knowledge in a number of disciplines, particularly Greek mythology. I must also praise the author/s of the book for creating a reader friendly compilation of the stories by providing: an interesting background introduction to Oscar Wilde; providing handy notes on the meaning and context to some of the archaic words/phrases; providing handy notes on the meaning and context to many of the Greek mythological references and words/phrases written in a different language.

It was a pleasure to re-read these stories again. I like this particular edition as it included all of Wilde's short stories - his fairy tales and the 'longer' stories like 'the Ghost of Canterville;
