This top-quality book details the temperament of the Shiba and gives invaluable advice on training and socialization. From the Inside Flap

The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest native dogs of Japan, dating back to the Third Century BC. This smart-looking Spitz type of dog was used as a versatile hunter, and was renowned for its famous howl. In this comprehensive Book of the Breed, the author examines the origins of this ancient breed, and traces its spread from Japan to the West, highlighting its new status as a popular show and companion dog. Territorial by nature, and fiercely loyal to its owners, the Shiba temperament is examined in detail, giving invaluable advice on training and socialisation. The Breed Standard is analysed, and there is a special feature on assessing a Shiba puppy. Illustrated with top-quality colour and black and white photographs, this is essential reading for the growing band of Shiba Inu enthusiasts. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sheer delight! 7 Aug 2002
Format:Hardcover
Maureen Atkinson provides an informative book for those considering this specialised breed.

The book begins with a history of the breed and provides details of most aspects of owning a Shiba (from choosing a puppy to becoming a show judge and breeding these wonderful dogs).

There are many colour photographs (you will be captivated by the puppy ones!) and there is a comprehensive breed standard section (with both US / British and Japanese specifications given).

Once you have read the book, you'll want to own the dog!

Not being a dog owner I bought this book to find out more about this breed. I find this book well written and easily read. I have learn alot about owning this breed and dog owning, generally. At times this book has had me in fits of laughter. The subject is thoroughly researched and based on the authors experience. It not only covers the subject in England but also world-wide. The end result...I bought the dog as well.

My husband and I adopted a shiba during an overseas military tour. Upon arriving in Alaska our vet had very few answers about our year and a half old shiba inu. We were scared out of our wits the first time she "threw off her coat". Our vet had no idea what was going on, we were worried sick. If you don't have access to alot of info on Shiba's this book is clear, concise, and very helpful in determining what has been going, is going, and will be going on with your Shiba. If you own a Shiba then buy the book. It will be immensley helpful in understanding your shibas quirks and keeping your Shiba disciplined, clean, and healthy. The more you know about your Shiba the more likley you are to outsmart him/her. The book was a great asset in outsmarting our little monster, if you have one or many, you will find something that will help you out in the book. Words of wisdom from one Shiba owner to the rest of us.
