I have just started to try to teach myself the saxophone. This book explains everything very well and is very easy to understand. Its also written with a sense of humor!

After trying other tutors and not making much headway, I bought this one and in a few short weeks I made more progress than the last few months.
Teaches very logically and advances at just the right pace for me with lots of tunes that most people know.....a good purchase.

The book devotes a lot of space to reading music and not so much to playing techniques. The first 18 pages on assembling the saxophone, breathing, and embouchure are excellent, with very clear photos and illustrations. The rest of the book seems like about 75% of it is devoted to learning to read the dots, which is obviously necessary if you can't read music already, but a bit superfluous if you can.
