Book Description

2 July 1998

THE COMPLETE PRATT compiles the first three volumes of the misadventures of Henry Pratt, beginning with a brilliantly funny evocation of a Yorkshire boyhood in SECOND FROM LAST IN THE SACK RACE; Henry's first job is as a cub reporter on the Thurmarsh Evening Argus, told in PRATT OF THE ARGUS, hailed by Sue Townsend as 'very funny'. Finally, in THE CUCUMBER MAN, Henry decides to take on a new role and a new challenge - working for the Cucumber Marketing Board in Leeds.

Stumbling through the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, Henry accumulates marriages and children along the way and THE COMPLETE PRATT is a touching and hilarious ride through a divided Britain...

Product Description

Review

David Nobbs is the funniest writer in Britain ... Nobbs' brilliance in contrasting plots, reflexive storylines and the most concise prose style since Raymond Carver makes these three books read like exercises in total comic brilliance (Word )

This trilogy is a superb read. Starting off with a vivid description of Henry Pratt's early life, we see him grow up in a variety of situations. Never short of female love, Henry moves through relationships as quickly as he moves through locales. The situations he finds himself in are funny, and his adventures are both hilarious yet sufficiently real to allow the reader to identify. I can't speak highly enough of this thoughtful book and this author. BUY IT! I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Pratt! 22 Feb 2001

Wonderful price for all three Henry Pratt books--and once you've read one, you'll want to read them all. I can't imagine anyone not laughing out loud as these wry (mis)adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff!! 28 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Pratt of the Argus was one of the books I inherited from my dear Ma and Pa. It sat on my bookshelves for ages and I kept looking at it thinking "I've just got to read that". Read it I did, followed by Second from Last in the Sack Race (wrong order, I know). Then I had to chase down a copy of The Cucumber Man. Just had to finish the series. These books are so touchingly funny, I simply couldn't put them down. My husband then bought me Pratt à Manger for my birthday. I just know I'll read these books over and over again... would really like to see them on Kindle.
