Product Description

Product Description

A poet who hated an age of decadence, armed conflict, and departure from tradition, Aristophanes' comic genius influenced the political and social order of his own fifth-century Athens. But as Moses Hadas writes in his introduction to this volume, 'His true claim upon our attention is as the most brilliant and artistic and thoughtful wit our world has known.' Includes The Acharnians, The Birds, The Clouds, Ecclesiazusae, The Frogs, The Knights, Lysistrata, Peace, Plutus, Thesmophoriazusae, and The Wasps.

I bought this book as a cheap way of having all of Aristophanes' plays because I study ancient history at university. However, I have not found it useful because the translations are so different to the ones used by the academic books I read. They often use Sommerstein's translation instead. There are also no line numbers, so it's almost impossible to find a reference to a certain part of a play.

Well, I like Aristophanes a lot and this complete collection of plays is a veritable bargain. They're all here... Birds, Clouds, Knights.. the Archanians (I'm sure you don't need me to go om..(sorry slight transcendental joke there). The translations are by various authors and generally I find them very readable.. and this is certainly the most expeditious means in cost terms of gettng your pesky mitts on his works. However as your granny says (and your car insurance sales rep)... cheapest isn't always best... and indeedy this little tome-ling has all the plays but what it lacks are the clear notes of the penguins classics to assist with undestanding the texts. For example whats an obol? (P...p...p...penguin to the rescue: 6 obols = 1 drachma). These little perfunctory kindnesses add very much to the enjoyment of the Penguin books and detract from this collection of works.

That said, I thouroughly enjoyed the plays and there is a slither of information prefacing each play. I loved Lysistrata (when the women of athens go on strike (abstinance from sex) to stop the Peloponnese war. Very funny... even if it did feel like i didn't get all the jokes!

My recommendation if your budget is tight buy it... but it does lack the clarity and elucidatory annotations of other works...

Was hoping for a cheap and accessible version of the plays but this is almost unreadable. There's typos, no explanation of any of the context, no line numbers and the translation is clunky at best. Worth buying a Penguin copy rather than this tripe
