Testimonials
"The ultimate typographic tool: a concise, beautiful book that pulls together everything you need to produce great typography."
--Frank Romano, RIT School of Print Media

"Clear and elegant...There's no better or more useful introduction to the whole craft of typography."
--Roger Black, Danilo Black, Inc.

"All you've always wanted to know about type and typography but never dared to ask. Jim Felici brings together a vast amount of knowledge in this book. Must-have!"
--Erik Spiekermann, author, Stop Stealing Sheep (and Find Out How Type Works)

This book is about how type should look and how to make it look that way; in other words, how to set type like a professional. It releases the craft knowledge that used to reside almost exclusively in the heads of people working in type shops. The shops are gone, the technologies have changed, but the goal remains the same. This book explains in very practical terms how to use today's computerized tools to achieve that secret of good design: well-set type.

Beautifully designed and richly illustrated, The Complete Manual of Typography is an essential reference for anyone who works with type. Designers, print production professionals, and corporate communications managers can go straight to the index to find focused answers to specific questions, while educators and students can read it as a textbook from cover to cover. You'll find:

  • History, basic concepts, and anatomy of good typography, concisely presented and indexed for quick reference by busy professionals.
  • Straight-ahead instructions for how to manage fonts, handle corrupted or missing fonts, and find the characters you need.
  • Clear, useful explanations of what makes good type good (and bad type bad) .
  • Detailed guidance on controlling the fundamentals of type, including measure, point size, leading, kerning, and hyphenation and justification.
  • Practical advice on how to fix and avoid composition problems such as loose lines, bad rags, widows and orphans.
  • Hard-to-find rules for managing indents and alignments, skews, wraps, expert-set characters, and tables.
  • Scores of workarounds that show how to wring good type out of uncooperative word-processing and layout programs.

Since the Disability and Discrimination Act 2003 my work as a designer has meant that along with a clean clear layout the right use of font, size, kerning, leading and placement on the page is crucial for those readers who have difficulty. This book not only goes through the fascinating history of type but gives you detailed information about leading, kerning and the use of baselines that can help you with a clean clear layout and tricky type issues.

Is a riveting read if you are a lover of type, fonts and the printed word.

This is a well-laid out book which practises what it preaches, and demands the highest commitment to excellence. It's also very clearly and well written--not always the case with expert manuals. It's full of examples of good and bad work and takes care to avoid trade jargon or explain it where necessary. Highly recommended, but only for those who like the author really care about typography.

The Complete Manual of Typography - A Guide To Setting Perfect Type by James Felici, 2003 is a great book. It's large at 10 x 8 inches and is packed full of all things helpful relating to Type and typography in a pleasant and enjoyable manner at 360-pages.

The book has two set of contents - the first is `At a Glance' and the second Table of Contents covers 10 pages, as each of the 18 chapters are broken down (in two parts). The book also includes a glossary, index and further reading which is the third part.

The book has numerous illustrations and figures which are made mention of within each chapter (though I could not find any mention of figure 1.4 from within the text from part one, yet 1.3 and 1.5 were present - pg.5). Chapter one, though technically part one is a general and somewhat basic history of printing typography from Gutenburg (c.1445) onwards which I found most enjoyable and informative as the author explains different types of type. This follows (in different chapters) with typographic measurements, typefaces, fonts, the basics of using typefaces, typesetting verses typewriting, setting type on a home computer and what makes good type (and bad type bad) which completes part one.

The fact this book leads by the plethora of examples (figures, various fonts, illustrations and tables) makes it so much more enjoyable and easier to understand with the visual aids back up by the text. The chapter on language specific issues did not merely cover British and American styles, but went into other European languages that were most helpful and informative, something I have not come across in other books so far.

On a downside I found the main text font too small - kind of ironic for a book that is about type and typography, however I got used to it by the 5th chapter! The layout is really good and the author is very proficient in his trade. The foreword to the book is by a person who works in a school of print and media and after having read the book, I can see why it would be so useful, if not essential, for those studying in this line of trade. However, the book is also beneficial for writers, authors and publishers.

An all-in-all Very Good Book on Typography
