My first encounter with the Dream Syndicate was the Medicine Show in the late 80's, and the slightly psychedelic, roots connected, 60's guitar-rock inspired sound hit me like a brick wall. Textual the songs are intriguing and are still interesting 20 years later. After following Wynns development during the 90's esp. with the Gutterballs I was amazed with how great the Syndicate songs sounded Live.

When I got hold of the "Complete live at Raji's" I was again overwhelmed with how much better the band performed Live. In comparison; "Burn", "Merrittville" and "Medicine Show" sound almost dull in their original package. I'm not saying that Cutler is doing a better job on guitar than Precoda, but at Raji's Cutler could lose his strings (so to say) and free float into solos on the brink to chaos. The quality of the recorded material during the 80's were not always top notch. Luckily this recording gives you the impression to be present in a downbeat showroom with 200 spectators, which is pretty much how it must have sounded that dark evening in January 1988.

To me this is one of the best Live recordings of all times - by any Band. I have seldom experienced so many great songs transformed into extremely great songs as with this particular recording. In addition to the aforementioned songs; also check out "Halloween", "That's what you always say", and the monumental opening track; "See that my Grave is kept clean". It's the definite testament from one of the greatest Live bands of the post-punk era.

These guys should have been mega stars. Everyone rated "The Days of Wine and Roses" and quite rightly so. But some never adjusted to the slightly more commercial sounds of "Ghost Stories" and "Out of the Grey" and the loss of guitarist Karl Precoda, and the dream faded. A pity because Paul B Cutler is an unsung guitar hero. Check out the madness on Halloween and other tracks on this sensational live outing. This guy rocks! Add in singer Steve Wynn's enduring lyrical genius and you have a band for all seasons, one of the best live records of all time, IMHO. Steve Wynn is still producing some great music but arguably without the guitar focus that made the Dream Syndicate such a force to be reckoned with. Buy this and appeal to him.....bring back the band, you know you want to!
