From Amazon.co.uk

A haunting piano accompanies us as we journey up a suburban nocturnal street, then into an upstairs bedroom. There we find the perennially pyjama-clad Jamie and his faithful Old English sheepdog Wordsworth--who, inexplicably, has a broad Yorkshire accent--poised to plunge through a psychedelic hole in the carpet, down an equally eccentric helter skelter, and into the Gateau Plateaux and Veronica Lakes of Cuckoo Land. This is where, naturally, they regularly meet up with the various natives: Mr Boo, the punctilious mayor; Jojo, the studiously unhelpful odd-job man; Officer Gotcha, the truncheon-eating neighbourhood cooper; ragdoll Nutmeg and, of course, Strumpus Plunkett, whom nobody ever quite understands the origin. Cue any number of unlikely adventures until, every single time, Jamie has to put his Magic Torch away and return to his bed.

One of the best animated series from a golden age in kids' TV, this collection of five episodes opens with "Mr Boo Loses a Mountain" where, not unexpectedly, the mayor misplaces Mount Potinakettle until the intervention of Jamie (and Wordsworth and Magic Torch), followed by "Nutmeg's House", "Let There Be Music", "Nutmeg's Box" (think Pandora, only much, much stranger) and finally "The Runaway Trombonium". --Danny Leigh

Product Description

Jamie is the proud owner of a rather special torch, which has magical powers. Every night when his mum calls out "sleep well Jamie!" he gets out of bed, picks up his magic torch and with his dog, Wordsworth, travels down a helter-skelter into the magical world of Cuckoo Land.

Here Jamie and Wordsworth meet some strange characters: Mr Boo, an absent-minded old gentleman, Jo-Jo, the odd-job man, Nutmeg, a rag doll, Officer Gotcha, the Cuckoo Land Constabulary, Strumpers Plunkett, Bulli Bundy and Wellibob. Together they have lots of adventures and Jamie's magical torch often helps to save the day. And all this before Jamie's mum discovers he is missing from his bed.

With 13 fantastic stories to watch, take a ride on the helter-skelter and join Jamie and Wordsworth on their exciting adventures in the magical word of Cuckoo Land.

Episodes:
"Mr Boo Loses a Mountain", "Nutmeg's House", "Let There Be Music", "Nutmeg's Box", "The Runaway Trombonium", "The Hair Stack", "Sym-phoney", "The Flying Rabbit", "The Magician's Hat", "The Wicked Wand", "The House of Wellibob", "National Wellibob Day", "Spade-Work".

Running time: 144 minutes approximately.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic! Not to be missed. 8 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:DVD
"Jamie and the magic torch" surely belongs close to the top of the list of surreal children's television series of the late seventies. From the sleepy, silent moonlit street on which Jamie lives - we are catapulted (via the thundering and catcy who-could-forget-it piano music) into the totally contrasting world of colours and sounds where the adventures take place. Bizarre and often non-sensical plots, peculiar and abstract (yet devilishly inventive) characters, surreal dream-like background music and neverending landscapes with oddly-coloured trees and skies. Pure quality!

The picture on this DVD is shown in the original 4:3 ratio and the image is excellent - within the confines of it being a fairly old series, it proves to be sharp, clear and colourful with very little noise. Sound also is clear and bright.

Ace - the kids love this kind of retro stuff. It has a different kind of sensitivity to today's hard-and-fast world!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia 27 Mar 2011

My secret vice, as I approach 40, is to buy up these 60s (before my time) and 70s children's programmes. I began buying for myself as a pure indulgence but found that my young nieces love them too.
Jamie was always a particular favourite of mine and the girls love him too. The argument at the moment is whether to watch Jamie, Chorlton or Bagpuss.
My eldest niece asked me not so long ago why they don't make kids programmes like this any more - no greater accolade I'd say.

This video is just a classic! from the title screen to the strange Floyd type music in between dialouge Why can't stories be told like that these days. In the words of Brian Tureman 'Jamie was Flabbergasted!' Brilliant

5.0 out of 5 stars Insanely surreal 8 Aug 2000
Format:VHS Tape
Perhaps the most bizzare childrens series ever made, this is a non stop ride through a land of incredibly odd characters doing incredibly strange things, yet somehow it all makes sense. Entretaining and funny, anyone who has fond memories of this as a child will not be disapointed. About the only negative thing I can say is that the way that the torch is able to solve every problem takes away any suspense we might have felt.
