Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Diana Damian on 30 Dec 2012
Format: Paperback
Despite its intent, this book (I can only assume it is self-published) is peppered with errors, generalisations and incredibly problematic assumptions about Romania, its history, character and inhabitants. In some respects, it covers an interesting array of information, but it's peppered with the author's rudimentary judgments that don't stem from research, but merely observation. It has no real methodology and its lack of transparency on the subjects it portrays only deters from providing any real understanding or knowledge of the country.

The author argues that, for example, Romanian is not a phonetic language; it is, but of course its phonetic character doesn't come across in English (?!). It's an incredibly baffling non-argument.

The author speaks of a pro Romania bias rather than pro-Romanian, and continues to portray Romanians as a people with no variety of opinions, scopes or interests; they are communists living in capitalism who despise gypsies and act starkly against foreigners.

Such superficial statements allow no real insight into the country's social politics, its relationship to tradition and its current living condition.

Wonderful introduction to Romania 10 Feb 2013
By Lynn P - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is funny, opinionated, and full of useful information. We purchased it before moving to Romania, but I also recommend it if you will be traveling in Romania for longer than a week. It has practical tips (eg buses & trains) as well as insight into the country (though you will STILL NEED Lonely Planet etc for specifics!). The author also has a website (which may be discontinued in 2013?). If you're an armchair traveler, the hysterical description of Foreigners in Romania alone is worth the price. Great guide to Romanian customs and culture 3 Jun 2013
By Eric J. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Although this is essentially a website that has been self-published as a book, the content is really thoughtfully put together. The author clearly has a lot of insight into what it is like to be an American living in Romania over an extended period, and I find that there is a lot of consistency with my own experiences over the past four months. He also helped me to understand some things that weren't readily apparent to me that I have observed. Very worthwhile for anyone spending any time on their own (without a tour group) in Romania.
A great read to discover Romania 3 Jun 2013

I visited Romania after reading the book & found it to be accurate. And it was fun to read. It would have been better with a map & index, but if you're going to Romania, you should have this book!
