Book Description

1 May 2012
When most people think of Romania, they think of gymnastics, vampires and orphans. I know because I knew little else when I first set foot here 12 years ago. It's not Romania's fault that it is so poorly understood outside its borders. It is only just now that visitors are starting to appreciate this magnificent jewel right at western Europe's doorstep. While other guidebooks on Romania are written by people who visit here once every few years, I live here and this is my home. I speak the language and understand the culture. It is my privilege and honor to now extend my knowledge on to you. If you or anyone you know is visiting or moving to Romania, this book will be worth its weight in gold to you as an expert guide on traveling, visiting and understanding the country. Included inside are Romanian food recipes, detailed travel tips, detailed guides on how to never get ripped off, what dangers to avoid, understanding Romanian cultural basics, how to talk to people, and most importantly, how to have a wonderful time!

Despite its intent, this book (I can only assume it is self-published) is peppered with errors, generalisations and incredibly problematic assumptions about Romania, its history, character and inhabitants. In some respects, it covers an interesting array of information, but it's peppered with the author's rudimentary judgments that don't stem from research, but merely observation. It has no real methodology and its lack of transparency on the subjects it portrays only deters from providing any real understanding or knowledge of the country.

The author argues that, for example, Romanian is not a phonetic language; it is, but of course its phonetic character doesn't come across in English (?!). It's an incredibly baffling non-argument.

The author speaks of a pro Romania bias rather than pro-Romanian, and continues to portray Romanians as a people with no variety of opinions, scopes or interests; they are communists living in capitalism who despise gypsies and act starkly against foreigners.

Such superficial statements allow no real insight into the country's social politics, its relationship to tradition and its current living condition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to Romania 10 Feb 2013

This book is funny, opinionated, and full of useful information. We purchased it before moving to Romania, but I also recommend it if you will be traveling in Romania for longer than a week. It has practical tips (eg buses & trains) as well as insight into the country (though you will STILL NEED Lonely Planet etc for specifics!). The author also has a website (which may be discontinued in 2013?). If you're an armchair traveler, the hysterical description of Foreigners in Romania alone is worth the price. (see 2011 edition for other reviews)
