Review

"It is not, in fact, a pornographic work, but a book depicting the art of living for the civilized and refined citizen, finding its expression in the sphere of love, eroticism, and the sensual pleasures of life. . . . Rather than calling the Kama Sutra pornography and hiding it on the highest shelf of their bookcases, Western readers should see it as the expression of a refined, sophisticated people on the art of love."--Audrey Chaix, "Vulpes Libris", Jan 2010

4.0 out of 5 stars But no illustrations! 18 Oct 2002

Format:Paperback
The book is a good translation of the original text, but beware that there are no illustrations whatsoever! If you are interested in the original text than this is an excellent book. If you are looking for a bedside guide I think you should look elsewhere.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title 31 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
I was doing a presentation on Kama Sutra and ended up buying this book in addition to 3 other KS's. The title is misleading. Though it has illustrations, they do not correspond to the text. I mean, as a reader, you will not be able to make sense of the text and match it with the illustrations. I found it helpful to read the plain text and look at Anne Coopers Kamasutra.

I mainly enjoyed this book, although it did abridge quite a lot of the original text. I found the articles on the other two translated "love-texts" very informative, although they overshadowed the main reason I bought this book - to read the Kama Sutra. Having read a friend's pocket version, the Burton version even abridged some of the basics as described in the pocket translation.

The emphasis appeared to be on the translation, not the interpretation, and, although the final half of the original text is basically a sex manual, the revelations are treated scantily, with very little advice and, in some areas, a very "dodgy" translation.

Burton's footnotes do interject a little humour but, as far as the Kama Sutra goes, this is not the best translation of the Kama Sutra I've ever seen. The other two translations of lesser-known love-texts are very informative, but again rather lacking in depth. The account of Burton's life is the most colourful and intriguing segment of the book - but unfortunately, as an introduction, it sets the precident which is not really lived up to.

In terms of understanding the text itself, I would recommend 'The Complete Kama Sutra: The First Unabridged Modern Translation of the Classic Indian Text' by Alain Danielou.

For those of you expecting a more "informative" read, then I would recommend 'Anne Hooper's "Kama Sutra"' over this version. It is interesting but these two texts are far superior!
