This book tackles this broad subject well. It is said that World War I is not a "popular" war to study because it's simply too complicated. This book helps straighten out the confusion and does a good job of addressing the different facets of this war. This is a good book to start with; it can help readers decide which avenue they want to study further (e.g. Pershing, weapondry, aerial, etc.)

Basic but Good 17 April 2012

This is a really basic overview of the 'Great War'. If you have little idea about the first world war this is a great place to start, but if you are hoping for detail then you need to look else were.

This was my first 'Complete Idiot's Guide' - I am usually a 'For Dummies' person but for some reason they don't do a book on WWI - and although the level of information was comparable to the Dummies books, I found the layout of this one more difficult to navigate, as to me it seemed like page after page of prose, whereas the 'For Dummies' books break the prose up with different headings, lists and sidebars which I have to say I prefer.

This book was incredibly detailed - the key facts were covered in one of the very first chapters and this would probably have been enough for me, though I did read the whole book as I don't like to think I'm missing anything! If you want full details of strategies, formations, weaponry and every major (and minor) battle then this is the book for you.
