Most of my experiences of Zen will be the same as anybody elses, what you've seen on TV, in the movies, picked up in books and what not. So this book will be perfect for you. It explains an awful lot of the basics of Zen in a simple easy manner. I can definetly say I understand the Zen concepts more completly after reading this book ; and for the price, I don't see anyone suggesting this book isn't great value.

This is a very superficial sort of book; it does tend to trivialise Zen. I suppose it does give a good overview of Zen practices but it is aimed fairly and squarely at the American market. So- rather predictably- its main focus is on improving workplace productivity, "managing your career" etc etc. No mention of ever having to change or give up your present lifestyle. Of course if you are a stressed "hockey mom", struggling to fit everything in that busy workaday schedule, there are small soundbites just for you, too.

So, once again, we have an American "self- improvement" book, wrapped up and disguised as a serious look at Zen, -whereas it is anything but.

Having practised Zen Buddhism for a number of years now, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book.

It is plain and simple, and to the point. It explains how you can live your life fully without classing yourself as "a Buddhist". (If that's what you want)

If you want to change your life for the better, or just become a nicer person- then this is a start. Also try taming the Mind, and working with Anger. Both are by Thubten Chodron.
